Re: 20 mins early
Is this them making you work the 40 minutes break that you aren’t paid for, as an additional 40minutes?
I would bypass the managers and call HR directly. Explain what is happening to them and there will be a direct answer.

Re: 20 mins early
New starters don't get paid breaks so they have to work their full 40 hours a week, it's not additional or unpaid it's just working their hours they get paid to work? There's not a lot a new starter can do about it if they choose to accept the job offer and so work for RM if the DOM is now making them work their full 40, or contracted, hours?

Re: 20 mins early
Sounds like they really are squeezing every last drop out of the new two tier workforce at the op's office, I wonder if they're applying the same to the longstanding staff, would be a bit unfair if anyone finishes early and does any ghosting.

So they aren’t starting 20mins early and finishing 20mins later? It’s just their hours? They’re not working 40hours + this additional 40mins everyday?TopperGas wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 15:06New starters don't get paid breaks so they have to work their full 40 hours a week, it's not additional or unpaid it's just working their hours they get paid to work? Re: 20 mins early
I assume they have to clock in 20 mins early, then go straight for their morning breaks or at least allow for the time when they take one, then have their afternoon break when they get back before clocking out 20 after the old contract staff have already clock off and gone home for the day. This really highlights the madness of the two tier contracts, I've no idea what's going on with them in my DO as I hadn't taken much notice.Barnacle wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 15:10So they aren’t starting 20mins early and finishing 20mins later? So they really are adding 40mins on per shift with no pay.TopperGas wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 18:20I assume they have to clock in 20 mins early, then go straight for their morning breaks or at least allow for the time when they take one, then have their afternoon break when they get back before clocking out 20 after the old contract staff have already clock off and gone home for the day. An employee who isn’t a lorry driver can’t be forced to take a break. So what if one of the new starts simply refuses to take a break?

Re: 20 mins early
We were only told last week we must take our breaks and if we don't and then have an accident/fall etc it will be down to us. Although forcing staff to have breaks at the start and end of their duties doesn't sound like a "break" anyway.Barnacle wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 18:39So they really are adding 40mins on per shift with no pay.TopperGas wrote: ↑22 Sep 2024, 18:20I assume they have to clock in 20 mins early, then go straight for their morning breaks or at least allow for the time when they take one, then have their afternoon break when they get back before clocking out 20 after the old contract staff have already clock off and gone home for the day. You can’t be forced to take a break and a break taken at the beginning or end of a shift is not a break.
If you do not take a break yes they would claim that any accident was as a consequence of this, but the accident would have to occur towards the end of your shift for that to be a valid argument.
