Raise first class by 30p but keep second class at the same price. Hope everyone uses second so they (we) only have to deliver it every other day.

Does anybody else finding it surprising that there's no Government control over what RM can charge for 1st class mail, or even any reaction today from the Government to the latest price increase, which effectively now makes it unaffordable for most customers.

Yet people can move house using royal mail parcels rather than a proper removal company.
It's cheaper for us to collect the contents of their house, minus the sofas, and then deliver it the other end.

When you think about it that makes no sense as surely it's minimal cost for a letter to move though through network compared to even just a small box?

The USO has always been at risk in private hands. The reduction in letters is being blamed for the company's financial losses rather than the profits being siphoned off by senior mis-management as regards investment, shareholders and executive and managerial bonuses. The company can theoretically save more £££ by not employing posties to deliver all the post everyday and Kretinsky has openly said that he wants to honour the USO for just five years.

Increasing 1st class postage makes it more of a premium product so fewer people will use it and this is part of Royal Mail's wider strategy of delivering the 2c every other day whilst maintaining the 6 day USO on 1st class. Unless 1st class letters are Tracked in the same way as parcels there is no way that quality of service on 1st class letters can be measured and maintained on a daily basis and what happens when the 2c doesn't get delivered every other day? The quality of service on letters could end up being smashed to pieces and no one in charge being accountable for it all.

First class stamp in 2013, pre-privatisation, was 60p. Second class was 50p. 'Modernisation' (job cuts) is great isn't it?!
