Monday Interview - More like it!

Post by navybloke »

I described the shambles of an interview which I had at a large urban depot a few weeks ago (didn’t get the job). I had another interview today at a different large urban depot, and it couldn’t have been more different. A proper interview, with proper questions, after a proper tour of the depot - exactly how things should be done. It may or may not have helped that the manager was ex-Forces and we worked out that we were in Afghanistan at the same time…we’ll see. I’m cautiously optimistic, and first impressions suggests this depot might be a better place to work. Plus it’s a ten-minute commute versus half an hour, which would be bliss! A couple of questions:

My 30-hour contract has a start time of 08:20. I was shown the overtime sheet where you can sign up to start at 07:00 to help with the sorting before the deliveries go out. 07:00 is not an early start for me - can you do that as often as you like?

The manager described a system whereby the mail is all nicely sorted into my frame when I arrive at 08:20, ready for me to bag up and get out the door. How often does it happen like that in practice? I imagine it depends entirely on the person who’s doing the sorting, and everyone’s different…

…of course, this will only be relevant if I actually get the job! Fingers crossed.

The delivery office will have a budget and will try to stick to it, so it’ll be up the your manager whether you can start at 7am each day. If you get the job then ask, 1 hour 20 mins overtime each day will add a decent wad to your wage, even on the new contract.

As far as your frame being prepared for you, it should be as you’ll be working with another postie who will know the duty and how to prepare it. Good luck.

Frame ready at 8.20?
Our final lorry arrives at 8.50 (if we are lucky).
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Sadly the old “Your frame being ready for you” is a fantasy that RM have been peddling for years to new starts. If it is it’ll probably be full of missorts and you’ll still need to do the other ancillary tasks such as redirections, collect Special, keys, turn for parcels etc.Just be prepared to complete own frame the majority of the time.

Good luck Navybloke.

It just shows the alarming difference in offices in the same region.

8:20 might be a tad wishful thinking 🤔, it will depend on the time of your last lorry to arrive at your depot.
Ours is now 8:15 (if it turns up).
I've heard of others way later than that.

Your manager should advise you if you are needed for 7am sorting, or your unsure, then please keep asking.
Budgets are tight I would imagine.

Also, on different days of the week, there are different levels or mail and parcels. Monday and Tuesday are pretty good, Wednesday and Thursday are much heavier and then I
The volumes slacken off again Friday and Saturday.
The first week of the month would be heavier than the last week of the month as well.
