Dear Colleague,

Following the 8 vehicle fires in the Iveco fleet during the period March 2005 - 2006, we were assured that the vehicle fleet was safe and that a programme to modify all Iveco Daily vehicle types on the fleet would be completed.

On 5 February 2008 in Newport an IVECO Daily Box Van caught fire and was destroyed along with its load of approx 60 parcels. The fire brigade were called to the scene to deal with the blaze. The speculation was that this was linked to the previous IVECO starter motor problems which lead to the national refit programme involving 849 Iveco Daily vehicles Parcelforce vehicles plus 301 in Royal Mail Letters fleet all of which were modified to eliminate the fire risk and had replacement, new and improved 'Bosch' starter motors fitted by Vehicle Services Workshops.

Royal Mail confirmed that all the Iveco fleet vehicle modifications were completed as per Iveco's instructions and that both Iveco and Vehicle Services believed that the modifications had addressed the original issue, this is supported by there being over 12 months since the last incident.

Investigations of the fire to determine the cause were initiated jointly by Royal Mail and Iveco. The vehicle history showed that the appropriate modifications have been done as per the safety campaign following the earlier Iveco fires and that the vehicle has been regularly maintained.

Royal Mail assured the CWU/HQ Health Safety & Environment Department that they would not allow drivers to continue to drive vehicles if they felt that they were at risk in anyway.

An update has been received today from Royal Mail that Vehicles Services have decided as a precautionary measure to change the starter motors on all Iveco Daily's where the starter motor has been fitted for more than 12 months. IVECO have agreed to support this rework prior to the conclusion of their own investigation into the Newport fire which they are currently carrying out with BOSCH.

This campaign will affect 981 vehicle across both Royal Mail and Parcelforce.

A Technical Service Bulletin will be issued next week to all Vehicle Services Workshops and the rework will be carried out over an 8 week period.
