I'm not sure, but I think there are about 140,000 full time and part time postal workers at present.
But our top managers want to cut another 40,000 jobs.

I have found some figures.
180 000-188 000 man working for RM right now.
You are advanced society, full of stats.
I am trying to calculate:
How much items single postie deliver per day.
You deliver 80 000 000 item a day.
Only one data missing...

I think that figure of 180 - 188,000 includes managers and other people
who are not actually postal workers.
It would be difficult to give a figure for how many items each postie delivers each
day as it would depend on whether the round was a city, rural, business or residential
and on other factors such as the time of year (busier at Christmas).

Frontline delivery staff figure is much lower than the figure you have but to give you a view of an "average" walk mine is as follows for today.

Geographical: Distance to start from office 1.5 miles
Total length of walk 8.2 miles (first to last letter)
Delivery points 415

Residency mix: From suburban residential with 100 metres between delivery points to sheltered housing with 4 metres between delivery points - Schools and residential homes for elderly and handicapped people. No retail business's but many professional people such as doctors, dentists and accountants.

Mail mix: Letters/magazines/catalogues/DTD'S (Avertising leaflets) for 33% of the walk(normally 20%per day but it is a short week)/packets and only one recorded delivery.

Todays mail: 8 bags totaling approximately 85 kg

Time taken 4 hours 10 minutes (delivery only)

I'm happy with that and fortunate to have a walk I like and it's only five minutes from home at the point where I finish. I do the delivery on foot and on a bicycle for the areas where there are large gaps or deliveries with no return down the other side of the route. I have 3 pouch boxes all well placed to accommodate mail brought out to me and never have to go overweight with the bags which is a good job 'cos I'm an old git.

As this info updating goes along I think there is something strange... We don't have that much kg, but we still work the same amount of hours.
But I think I have found the crucial difference.
Serbia is NOT so organized society, our infrastructure is at sadly condition. Maybe is your mailboxes more approachable, well organized and it is not so heavy
to deliver.
We have over a 70 recommended letters and we have to climb to flats. It would be impossible to deliver that amount of letters with all that time wasted with recommended letters.
How many recommended letters do you have?
Just curious...

I think what you call recommended letters are letters that have to be signed for?
We call them Special Delivery or Registered letters. I think our delivery posties
have a maximum amount far less than 70. I don't know what the figure is, but I
expect one of the delivery posties will tell you.

It is a large confusion in my head. You work so much, leave your heart on sidewalk and managers will put some more weight in your bags?
Slavery or not?
That is the question....

70 signed for's? That would be a nightmare.

Typically my rural round has only 10 per day!

NOBODY could deliver so much material in Serbia.
Not to mention money.
Pensions. Twice a month, each postman delivers pension (cash money) to our older citizens.
There is some tip involved, but it is so far away from golden age of postman. Pure gold...Some legends are quite fascinated...
We deliver invitations for court as well. Layers with offices, touchy, so touchy. Every postman knows letter laws like judges because we all had (me 3 times, wins 3, loses 0) that pleasure visiting courts because layers, like all layers, tried to fake signatures and avoid hearings.
I don't know what is the our managers agenda but I am now more frightened than before. Our politicians, since the democratic changes, always and without exception compare two systems. Eu and Serbian. Getting it together is THE ULTIMATE task! How it's like? Like driving bicycle over arable land...

That sounds remarkably like my walk, but mine is 3 miles from DO and I'm expected to sort it and deliver it in 5 hours (I'm on a 25 Hr contract) which I have never done yet! I get the feeling my overtime is going to be questioned soon.

I normally get about 3 or 4 signed fors early in the week, maybe 8 or 9 on a friday. Today I had 5 and NOBODY was in, so had to take them all back, along with another 5 parcels that weren't signed fors.
