French Postal Fleet Switching to EVs
By Mark Durham EmailFebruary 27, 2007 | 11:55:02 AMCategories: Electric Vehicles

Cleanova22

An eight-EV test by the French postal service has been so successful that La Poste is now instituting a five-year plan to replace most of its 48,000-vehicle fleet with electric vehicles. The trial, which began in late 2005, saved money and delivered higher job satisfaction in addition to its environmental benefits.

The vehicles tested were developed by aerospace magnate Serge Dassault's Société de Véhicules Électriques. The lithium-ion battery that powers the EVs was developed by Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls and French battery maker Saft Groupe, a partnership that has also been tapped by GM to develop a battery for its Chevy Volt.

Société de Véhicules Électriques will begin volume production in late 2007 with 1,000 vehicles per year and, beginning in 2009, slowly increase that to about 20,000 per year. The price hasn't been set, though the lithium-ion battery (about 60 percent of the vehicle's cost) will make it steeper than for a gas-powered vehicle. But La Poste says it will make that up in operating costs: electricity to charge the EV costs one-sixth what gas would cost.

To broaden the EV's appeal, SVE has also developed a plug-in hybrid version with a small diesel engine that can recharge the battery on the fly, eliminating the van's range limitation and boosting its power. Renault plans to come out with a similar EV in 2010 as part of its partnership with Nissan, despite a failed attempt to market an electric van five years ago. PSA Peugeot Citroën, which produced some 10,000 EVs during the 1990s, says it's headed down the hybrid road instead.

PSA Peugeot Citroën may be remembering the 700 EVs it produced for La Poste 11 years ago, whose batteries just weren't up to the task. But this time around, La Poste has no qualms about electrifying its fleet. As its director for environmental affairs told the Wall Street Journal: "The car works great, with almost no maintenance. We're ready to order more."

We use 48 and 64 box sorting frames like that in Mail Centres, which are the large sorting offices
where mail is first sorted for different towns and cities, before it is sent to the Delivery Office.
In the Delivery Office the mail would be sorted on the RM2000 frame for delivery.
