The share price has collapsed in the last week or so as the stock market is apparently sensing the latest results will make further grim reading, there's no real evidence RM are profitable.postslippete wrote: ↑13 Mar 2024, 20:08
Thanks for your reply and I get what you saying but what Royal Mail are doing is deliberate. I've already given you the facts that the group had retained earnings of £3.8 billion last year and our liquidity has also increased from £1.7 billion to over £2 billion last time I checked the financial accounts. Put simply, there is money in this company and we are not going bust anytime soon.
I remember when Leighton and Crozier said that Royal Mail were losing a million pounds a day and the next year we made over £400 million in operating profit. Quite the turnaround, and if everything goes to plan given the deal I have no absolutely no doubt that we will be even more profitable in the foreseeable. But what is really holding Royal Mail back is their agenda to reduce the USO, and until we do, they may still keep posting losses/breaking even, using creative accounting to suit this narrative. They did this with the 'billion pound' loss with impairment charges that were not related to the daily operations. Don't forget that Royal Mail have spent millions building these super-hubs as well and this is an investment for our future. The CWU have already drawn their line in the sand by advocating a 5 day mail week and whilst no Union wants less jobs, it goes somewhere to help realign what the company wants. They certainly don't want a 3 day mail service as that's far too much, too soon.
It's not just about shareholder dividends as some of our big time investors are in this for the long haul. There is a reason why Kretinsky keeps upping his stake in our company and I believe it's because there is plenty of profit to be made in our company in the long run. They have seen how profitable GLS can be delivering parcels and they want Royal Mail to follow a similar gig economy model. Ever since Covid they have seen how deprioritising letters has been very profitable and they are desperate to get rid of the heavy millstone hanging over their necks with the USO.
These are my thoughts and clearly you have a different opinion, so we may have to agree to disagree, but I have no doubts that Royal Mail is profitable and that IDS do indeed cross-subsidise like most companies do. We actually bought the company with our past profits in 1999 when it was German Parcels and they have been spending millions in Europe with these hubs.

Yeah, apparently it's on the brink and only a 3 day mail service will save it. You don't think what RM are doing is deliberate? We never needed a 3 day mail service years ago and we had more staff, smaller walks and half as many parcels to deliver on our walks.
There's been plenty of bad news about RM recently that will spook the markets but there's plenty of evidence that RM are more profitable than ever, it's just that people can't be bothered to go look for it and simply believe what the news say
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Another one. Again, feel free to point us in the right direction and educate us on these profits RM are making. Provide us with this ‘plenty of evidence’.postslippete wrote: ↑14 Mar 2024, 21:56Yeah, apparently it's on the brink and only a 3 day mail service will save it. We now have three in a van doing walks that two posties used to do, two PDA's between three, those unscanned parcell numbers are given to the girl in the locker to sort, not sure where she gets the doorstep scan from
