More than 120 delegates from the CWU UK and more than 10 European countries met at a conference that had been organised by the CWU to consider the changes the union needed to propose with the review of the postal service currently being undertaken in the UK. Presentations from Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia, Germany, France and the UK regulator Postkom along with a presentation from Royal Mail, fuelled a very lively discussion on how the liberalisation that was now taking place in Europe would affect workers and their employment. The conference also heard from CWU UK General Secretary, Billy Hayes; Deputy General Secretary, Dave Ward; and Head of International Affairs, John Baldwin; who described the situation in the UK and how that was affecting employment issues. New UNI Post & Logistics Head of Department, Neil Anderson, also made a presentation where he said UNI would work with affiliates globally to develop a solid programme to support a regulatory environment that recognised the need for a properly funded universal postal service, a quality service that was providing quality jobs and financial transparency in all of the companies operating in the Post & Logistics industry.

The conference also discussed the need to organise the multinational companies now operating in the post & Logistics industry and to get them to pay decent wages and provide good safe working conditions for their workers. "

I don't think the French need to learn from the CWU they are quite capable of standing up for there rights. At least when they strike they stay out till they get it resolved.

The CWU have had to cope with the postal liberalisation being thrust on us. Hopefully, the others can learn from the mistakes made so far.

Our prospects are not good and the public service is deteriorating. Telling everyone in Europe about it might help to provide the motivation for changes to be made to the European legislation.

And if we could all go on strike together....

No, but the CWU could learn a Hell of a lot from the French. If we adopted their methods, we would actually stand a chance of winning from time to time.

Too true their politicians and to some degree their armed forces are not known for tenacity, but their workers and unions are most certainly know for standing up to bad laws and bad agreements.
