Royal Mail names most desirable areas
A new top 10 list of the most desirable places to live in the UK has been produced by Royal Mail.
Called the Home Movers Barometer, the list was based on figures relating to over half a million changes of address.
UK home movers, it seems, are flocking to the West Country. Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset all make appearances in the top 10. Calculated by net moves, these counties claimed fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth places respectively. Between them, the four areas attracted 10,847 new householders, who travelled more than a million miles to relocate from other parts of the UK.
Kent tops the table, with 5,068 moves into the area. Only London and Surrey achieved higher move-in levels, but because they have also experienced significant moves out, neither makes it into the top 10.
Other counties to appear include West Sussex (second), Suffolk (ninth) and Essex (tenth). Hampshire (third) and Lincolnshire (seventh) also performed well.
The report also shows that, while not making it into the top 10, smaller regions have been successful in attracting new residents. Most significant are the Scottish Isles (not including the Shetland or Orkney Islands), which welcomed 289 new households, who moved an average of 217.82 miles each to relocate.
Additionally, existing residents of Hampshire, Kent, Essex and Devon have been proved extremely loyal, all demonstrating a high level of moves within their respective counties. People from Kent were most fond of their ‘Garden of England’, clocking a substantial 12,646 internal moves and an average of just 5.39 miles per relocation.
Devon County Council’s executive member for economic regeneration, Councillor Humphrey Temperley, said: “We are not surprised by these findings, as the West Country holds a unique charm that many find hard to ignore. This, combined with Devon’s recent investments in schools and hospitals, the burgeoning economic climate and the picturesque countryside, makes for a quality of life few counties can compete with.â€

Its lovely here, can't afford to buy a place to live and you need to learn 20 different languages to communicate(that is not meant to sound racist)

Your right - on my delivery I am guessing only about 20% ask for a re-direction when they go, mind you some do moonlight flits when they bailiffs are getting too close.Lounge Lizard wrote:This wrongly assumes that everyone who moves pays for a Redirection. What it doesn't show is how many poorer people, unknown to Royal Mail, are forced to move to cheaper, less desirable areas.
