I’m not entirely sure why the union are even getting involved. The government have said it isn’t happening.
Because everyone knows at some stage it will happen.
This year, next year maybe the year after but it will happen.

Rishi has said he will not countenance a move to a 5 day service. He probably won't countenance a 250 million/year bailout either.
So what are his plans?
Why should the prime minister have a plan for a private company? Perhaps if they got rid of 90% of the non operational grades they might start looking a bit better.its up to Royal Mail to come up with a better plan , with this board I wouldn’t be holding my breath.
The USO costs us money, if they want us to provide it, then they should pay for it.

Many firms have replaced line managers with team leaders who do all the same stuff as a normal working but supervise their team as well.

Wave 2 mech is kinda dead now. Got a pair of batches for the same DO and a lot of the time I can get both batches into the same box. Think it'll only be a matter of time before wave 2 gets axed and everything gets rolled over into the next days wave 1.

Mech in general is way down atm, don't know if it's just the normal post Xmas drop off but some batches seem to be half the size they used to be. Flats if you exclude magazine postings they are dead.

Manual letters are also dead a lot, we can pull out a fair bit of machinable mail. If RM were to pull their finger out and sort out all the machines being able to read the address encoded on the official redirection stickers then we could send a load more to mech

This gets more bizarre by the day , Martin Walsh on the radio today saying how we can play a role in social care moving forward. He also says union are up for a discussion regarding dropping the Saturday but not reducing to 3 or 4 day service.
I’m not entirely sure why the union are even getting involved. The government have said it isn’t happening.
Just what is this Social Care thing the CWU keep going on about?I get the fact we have the ability to visit every household but come on we Deliver pieces of paper and boxes of stuff with no qualifications in Social Service.

No idea , the union have been banging on about expanding the role of postal workers for years now without really explaining what that means . Bottom line is if it doesn’t involve making money for the company it’s a non starter.

The old let's get them to meet halfway trick. Say we want 3 days of mail so we compromise on dropping Saturdays. 2 can play that game, we'd like to make it 9 days of mail a week.

Local reps stance isn't even close to what Mr Walsh is saying.

As soon as Martin Walsh got voted in I pulled my union subs - does he look like a guy who’s done a delivery in the last 10 years ? He’s a bumbling fool

The union produced a document during the strikes laying out their alternative vision for the service. I read it and I'm none the wiser.
The machine stops.

Couldn’t disagree more , hes actually trying to engage the workforce again and communicating with us which is the exact opposite of how Ward and the union have been behaving for years.

So going on someones appearance is enough to make you pull your subs seriously.

It's bad enough bringing a loop back and having to double up on it the next day...I dread to think a full frame of 2 days worth of mail being delivered 3 times a week would be like....amongst all the parcels!
The parcels are getting delivered 7 days a week. You must be on a wild delivery to be getting that much letter mail. I get probably an average of one tray a mail a day in my walksort. When busy. Flats are next to nothing right now.
I do agree with Lou on the drop in letters but it does not tell the whole story...

The work load has not reduced by the same percentage drop in actual posted mail (and DSA). Also, sometimes you get battered with magazines and catalogues on some walks. Add 1/6th d2d (will now be 2/3rds), then it will still amount to a lot of call rate.

There is no point talking about new starters that signed a contract to work weekends - eyes wide shut!

The loss of staff will be by natural wastage supplemented by agency staff - that is the only way for a business with fluctuating volumes

Ofcom report has nothing to do with the agreement of union - it was obvious that customers in general do not care about letters everyday, so the business has to adjust to that fact and drop in volume - laws of marginal returns - less profit is made with less letters (cost too high).

As for parcels, if the big parcels are taken out of walks, then things will be more manageable (DPD style drivers were to be recruited)...

* Some bigger offices actually benefitted from agency staff doing most of their big parcels and LATs and other cut offs - those managed to get bigger bonuses than smaller offices struggling with big parcels and less staff and vans.

We are where we are! RM has to be very profitable for us to continue to be paid better than others; and to satisfy the owners!

Wow , even worse than most thought, they want to go way beyond dropping the Saturday it seems , worrying times ahead it seems.
If letters are already only going out every other day for many walks in many DOs then does it really make any difference apart from making it official policy?
It obviously will because they’ll staff it accordingly and not every office is working the way you described it , I know plenty in my area that are delivering as normal.
Good points from both contributors. Leaving letters in for 1 day is now the norm in my office although it is avoided but we lack the staff... And yes, other offices have to follow suit and reduce staff where needed - but there should be no need to make people redundant: natural wastage and loaning people out...

we are being told not to even put mail in one frame anymore. Mail in the frame is a failure, mail under the frame untouched in boxes is apparentely fine. i came back this week one day after prepping one frame to find all mail had been removed from it, for me to reprep next day. Absolute shambles

It’s an absolute joke, that’s even worse than having to bring all of your mail back that you can’t deliver on time, instead of just leaving it in the frame, which we are doing at the moment. Fraudulent company, how they get away with it I don’t know, but then I guess Ofcom or anyone else don’t give a damn.

You will need probably 60% of the staff you have now if you went to every other day and every day you would have at least a 75% call rate on every delivery plus the non tracked parcels which will be inevitably left. It was be like Xmas levels every single day.
What happens when we get to Christmas?
