Use them or lose them!
Anyone else seen the notice on the people app about losing any holidays over 5 days if not taken by end August this year? Appeared today ... You can only carry over more than 5 days if agreed with a manager, otherwise it's gone

Re: Use them or lose them!
It would depend on your contract, eg. 37 hour contract would be 37 hours carried over, anymore hours would require approval from a manager. A 30 hour contract would be 30 hours carried over, this was, I'm fairly sure, in the Way Forward Agreement from some years ago.

This is what I was told when I started nearly 3 years ago, as max49 said it was in the way forward agreement

Re: Use them or lose them!
Thought holidays run from April to March 31st? We have to book them before the new ones start. So no more than 5 days after 31st March, or is this the new rule?

Re: Use them or lose them!
At no point have I ever requested to carry over accrued hours, nor have I ever been asked if I was content to do so. Hence I have over a hundred hours built up over the last couple of (shitshow) years like plenty of other colleagues. What I have asked is to use that excess annual leave but that got shot down on the basis that we're grossly understaffed.
If they don't go ahead with this cashgrab, the best outcome is that accrued hours will just be automatically approved for carry-over.
The machine stops.

Re: Use them or lose them!
They've given you all a couple of extra months of "low" business time to burn the holidays you've earned over the "leave year" of April - March. They shouldn't really have much excuse to deny many holidays here.
As a brief recap: Your employer can force you to take holidays as they wish, but on the other side, they MUST make it so you CAN take them if they do not do so, staffing be damned. If you keep making requests and they keep being denied, it's an ACAS claim.
RM are relying on this particular segment of the rules:
Note The bolded section. If they won't let you take it, it carries over. Remind them of this, or go to ACAS after they refuse to accommodate you. Keep trying ,slam requests in for every week up til the deadline, and if you gotta, ACAS. If you've made attemtps and constantly get refused, they will side with you.
swift edit: Simply tell them "I want to use my holidays, please assign me them as soon and as frequently as possible so they are used up before the deadline.". Do it in writing / email. They will have no defence when you challenge them later if they don't fix it.

Workers can carry over their whole leave entitlement if any of the following apply:
they did not receive ‘rolled-up holiday pay’ that they were entitled to
they were not given reasonable opportunity to take leave
they were not told that they would lose their leave if they did not take it by the end of the leave year

According to the new message on the people app, you can carry over 5 days, but anymore than that has to be agreed by a manager ... Otherwise, according to the message, you will lose them, but we'll see what happens ...

Put everything in writing, make sure there’s a paper trail showing you’ve been declined the use of your legally entitled annual leave, then go to ACAS.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Specific dates that you have requested can absolutely be turned down, but you need to counter this by asking your manager for availability, by email preferably and request their reply by the same.
If they say weeks X, Y and Z are available. You need to put the effort in to request whatever of this is most favourable to you.
Managers are unlikely to put the effort in to supporting you to be able to take accrued leave so you sadly need to trap them in to having no choice but to let you take it

Re: Use them or lose them!
I had a problem like this a few years ago.
The company 'lost' my holidays due when I transferred office.
I had put in a complaint and eventually got the two weeks back. (I think that took the best part of a year.) Then I tried to use them and was told that I couldn't have them when I wanted them. So, I didn't use them. (That took about another year.)
And then I got this in Jan/Feb ... oh, you have to use your holidays up! You have too many.
I put in another complaint. I refused to to have my holidays when I was told to. Quite happy to leave the useless company. You have to fight for your holidays and then you have to fight to have them when you want them.
All sorts of pathetic bullying tactics.
Eventually got some manager down to resolve it and came to an agreement.
