A POSTWOMAN has been given the sack after her van was stolen while she delivered mail in Herefordshire.

Sara Ayliffe believes she was unfairly dismissed following the theft in Llangrove and has the backing of angry villagers who have written to Royal Mail to support their favourite postie.

But Royal Mail has defended its decision and says employees are regularly briefed on security issues and reminded of their duty to safeguard mail at all times.

Ms Ayliffe was delivering mail to rural homes near Ross-on-Wye when the van was taken. A passer-by helped her track down the vehicle but mail was missing when they found it.

The 40-year-old said she was suspended at first before a letter was sent to her Ross home earlier this month ending her 19 years' service with Royal Mail.

They've been cracking down on mail integrity in my office recently (we haven't lost a van yet) but have had several people put on warnings because of mail left in the front of the van.

This should be a warning to all of us who deliver - Always keep the mail in the back of the van, always turn off engine and lock the van whenever it's going to be left unattended and for those on bikes never leave your mail on the bike whenever you go off down the road to do your delivery.

A postwoman from Ross-on-Wye has been dismissed for leaving the post van she was driving unattended which was subsequently stolen. Despite support from customers, Royal Mail terminated the contract of Sara Ayliffe (40) after 19 years service.

Steve Lawson at Hellmail, the postal news site said:

"Royal Mail is renowned for dismissing any postal worker that leaves mail unattended, and when keys are left in the vehicle RM regards it as gross negligence. Dismissal invariably follows, no matter how long the employee has been with them."

"Whilst we fully understand and recognise the need for Royal Mail to put a line under these cases, 19 years of service is a noteworthy show of committment to say the least, and we do feel that Royal Mail has been very harsh in this case - if not draconian. A severe reprimand yes, but dismissal seems heavy-handed."

"Ms Ayliffe made every attempt to retrieve the vehicle and it seems a heavy price to pay for a mistake when postal workers are now under enormous pressure to complete their rounds on time. It does not paint a picture of a company that fully recognises the commitment that employees so often demonstrate, or indeed project a good image towards new recruits. A review of this policy might be in order." he said.

too top down and regimented , mark of poor management, no loyalty given , none expected, very corporate but if it's automatic dismissal noone can use comparators in a ET.RM would state they acted reasonably legally speaking .

RM would say it'll stiffen people's resolve but shooting shell shocked soldiers in WW1 was supposed to stiffen resolve .

When will these people ever learn for gods sake,feel sorry for the gal,but what else is there to say.

Old Numnuts also mentions about us being under pressure to complete our rounds,wasn't he the same pratt that slagged us off for striking to stop all that.
We knew it was coming and all they did over there was take the piss out of us and slag us off.

I meant sitting in isolation. We've got unions all over europe AND a global one called UNI and I've yet to to see much evidence of thinking outside the box either here or from the CWU. I find it bizarre that an EU initative is being fought by basically powerless mini-unions that dont even link up. Madness. Fat chance of success unless we do. Anyone know whats going on with portugese postal workers? No, thought not. Go find out. All these countries have the same gripes but everyone thinks theres nothing beyond Dover.

Yes they are fighting abolition of their collective agreement with the Correios de Portugal, S.A (the Portuguese Postal Service) CCT. Two of UNI's Portuguese affiliates, SNTCT and SINTTAV took strike action in february.

PS as far as I know the CWU are affiliated to the UNI. But just checking that right now.

We've mentiond that NT a few times on here,i know Billys been about over the water at times,but not enough has been done.
We should of had Europe wide strikes and demos,not just the odd demo like we've had but like a European tour type thing,ending up at each Governments HQ.
But then that would be too easy eh.

Affiliation is one thing but since liberalisation theres been one major rally in Berlin which was notable in its abence of Brits! If we're to be part of some federal effort, trying to fight change on your own soil is tantamount to trying to demolish a house with a toffee hammer.
