How do you arrive at that conclusion? Why do you only work weekends - and by that you must mean only Saturday.booby wrote:To get your £400 it also involves making me redundant. As a weekend worker, I have 2 choices... a buydown of hours or VR!!! so the rumour has it..... would be useful if my manager could answer some of the questions I have!!! Only he doesn't have a fekin clue! In fact.... he was quite worried for his own job when I told him!!! :cfo

I work sundays. I have a reserved rights contract (for every hour worked on a sunday its classed as 2).
My union has signed an agreement and part of that agreement is to get rid of of my contract (and others alike) either by VR or buy down of hours!!
The union rep agreed to this without consulting us!!!
Sold down the river by our very own CWU!!
Think I might try and get all my union fees re-imbursed...... They took my money and gave my job away!!! NICE ONE

Well I don't want to appear insensitive but I am surprised you've survived this long in the present climate. Considering you only work 1 day buy down would hardly be an option would it?booby wrote:I work sundays. I have a reserved rights contract (for every hour worked on a sunday its classed as 2).

These contracts have been in place for 12 years now. At the time of advertising these duties, only a handful of people wanted them.. They were literally begging people to take them..... And as a parent working 5 evenings part time a week it was possible for me to gross my hours up and work only 1 day.
Since taking this duty and only having 1 day travelling to work and back I moved further away from my place of work, got my children into great schools and worked my life around these hours....
A buy down of hours would result in a huge loss of pay with little compensation... And VR (according to my own calculations) wouldnt even give me a years pay.....
To go back on the shift I originally had would probably only work if I moved home, resulting in my children having to change schools too.....
So I have 3 options..... LOSE LOSE OR LOSE!!!
CWU rocks!!!

Well I would say yours is a lost cause and to be realistic how many people is this going to affect? 12 years is a long time for an anomaly like that. Lots of people have 25 hour contracts and get 25 hours pay over 5 days - you however get 16 hours pay for 8 hours work on 1 day - well for me it's a no brainer.booby wrote:A buy down would be possible,

Might ask em if I can stay behind after my duty and clean the toilets too...

The reserves at my office have been asked if they would be prepared to go to different offices, 20 different postcode areas.....no one has volunteered
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet

Nationally it affects all people who work sundays.... Although we are the minority, we all pay our union fees and expect good representation.
Royal Mail approached me with this contract, and at the time they were more than happy when I accepted it. ( this duty was offered to all part timers who, for example have 25hour contracts and get paid for 25 hours work over 5 days.... only 4 applied!)
I am disappointed with the CWU as I feel they should have consulted us prior to signing off such an agreement.... If they had spoken with us first we would have been aware of the forthcoming situation. As of yet we have seen nothing or heard nothing from CWU which is resulting in more worry and lots of unanswered questions.
But like you say, to be realistic who is this going to affect?
Me and a few others!
Surely if it was only 1 person it affected they have rights to fair representation like everyone else?
Bend over, put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye

flexability agreement
Here at York Central Delivery
........Our Union Rep "signed off" the agreement without any prior consultation with the staff! This was confirmed this morning by our Dom in the WTL.....And our Union Rep was not even there to explain why?????? Silly me! thinking that a few proposals would be put to us by our Union rep and that we could decide the best proposal for flexability!
Shafted Yet Again!!!

Nothing lasts forever. As for the CWU and fair representation well we didn't have that in the first place. Pretty soon Sunday working will be a thing of the past anyway. If I was an employer I would certainly look at ways to get rid of contracts like that. I know it affects you considerably but looked at dispassionately it isn't the most cost effective method for productivity is it?

I think that's a knee jerk reaction linkin. Everyone is trying to save money and RM is no different. 2500 Post Offices are closing, there are seldom 40 hr contracts anymore, working hours are changing from the static 5 am starts to longs and shorts, we are expected to be flexible, there is to be a collapse of duties for summer efficiency which means more work, and the reason for this is PAY AND MODERNISATION 07/08 which was recommended, balloted for and accepted. If I had been on a contract booby describes I would have been worried a long time ago.linkinpark wrote:Sorry i dont get you! we sign a contract to turn up for work and do our job in a decent honest way as stated in our contract if not we lose our jobs. Is it so much to expect our employer to do the same? Or have we become so used to taking a kicking that all that they do is ok no matter what and we roll over and wait for them to scratch our bits and throw us a bone whilst we lick their hands in grattitude like the DOGS we are treated as?dvbuk55 wrote:Nothing lasts forever. Now first i would say stready on brother, Why are we saving money? The system was not broken until? And who is getting the benifit from these savings? Is it the customers (OUR PUBLIC?) Dont think so! Is it US the POSTIES? Dont think so! Then who? Why are WE paying and doing more for less? Why are our public paying more for less? What is going on is wrong! Someone or some people have decided to make cash from our service and us to give them a free ride on the gravy train! (excuse the phrase god knows who?) And the thing that these faceless people most want is for us to expect and except it and not ask why. But i do and always will because it is us and OUR local communitys that suffer and for why? We are all being ripped off, booby is being ripped off and an injury to one is an injury to all! Is that not why we joined a trade union?linkinpark wrote:dvbuk55 wrote

Quite right too. That's why we DID join a trade union BUT the nature of the beast has changed. What we expected from the union is no longer on offer. The union no longer puts it's members aspirations first - we should perhaps call it a mutual friendly society - mutually friendly to our employers and itself. As a former Labour Party member I expected something more than I actually got, that was a social conscience and a return of workers protection - sadly the reality is far from that. We live in the society that has been created by the organisations we once trusted.
