Cardinal sin is to even sit on the sofa if you want your afternoons to mean anything. Personally when i get home i'm reasonably tired from the walk, but no biggie, i'll get a shower and changed, and go straight into town or get ready for the evenings entertainment, gig, pub whatever.

I'm relatively ne to the job, so it might come back and haunt me, but i seem to have a body clock thats flexible, after spending years cleaning windows from 5 AM till 4 in the afternoon, RM seems a doddle to me.

Reminds me of myself 40 years ago, Man are you in for a rude awakening. Enjoy it while you can. I used to laugh at blokes that said they slept in the afternoon and then i felt this thing come over me, at first it came on realy slowly couldn't put a name to it just strange sort's of ache's and pains. Then it developed in to feeling tired where once i would'nt have been. Then it came to me like devine intervention. I realised i was f***ing old!!!!!. The medical term is OLDUS f***ing GITTUS. Still with the guy of 22 feeling the same he's given me a new lease of life. Might even kick off the big slipper. :nana :nana

Whilst I find increasingly that I need a sleep, albeit a short one when I get home, I can still cope with the delivery requirements with just a few aches and pains. Our problem for the older guys and gals at the moment is that RM see us as workhorses which they hope that they can drive out of the business with exhaustion, taking our experience with us. We will be replaced with machines that they just slot a new module into when they break down - not even a lot of technical expertise needed for that - and willing fit young staff with no hopes of a decent pension that they will bully and coerce into fitting their lives to a business that doesn't know whether it is coming or going.

So - get off the sofa and enjoy your senior lives - weekends (short as they are) and evenings are still there for enjoyment not just rest and they will brighten your miserable working hours if you use them properly.

I can still go trotting round the Peak District on a day off and dance 'til 02:30 to my favourite soul music at the Twisted Wheel (I have even been to more all nighters as a late 50's year old than I did when I went there as a teenager although I now have to book a day off for the ones that clash with work), sometimes amazing the kids by coming more or less straight to work after getting home about 4am.

Take heart all my fellow knackered old gits - there is a great life outside of Royal Mail and used properly it will help you cope with anything.

I woke up about three and a half years ago, feeling a bit tired and I've been tired ever since. I need 2 weeks holiday just to feel like I've had a day off. I never used to feel this tired and I'm not that old. It must be these declining mail volumes.

I've worked for RM for about 8 months now and love the fact that i get most my afternoons off but i cant do anything with them as most the time im tired.

does anyone else have this problem?

Also i've been wondering lately do i really have to work the hours i have been doing? Today i worked till 3 o clock and my finishing time was 12.30, ok so its overtime but my finishing times have really pissed me off the last couple of weeks, i wouldn't mind if it was any other job with overtime but its the fact you are constantly walking and it gets so tiring.

Apparantly i am on one of the hardest walks in the office so once i become a floater and learn the other walks i'll be ok but i just wish that time would come sooner, we have already had one lad do my walk and he packed in because he couldnt handle it.
Almost identical to you my friend... With flexibility coming in there will be no cutting off which will tire me out even more... Sleep pattern is a little messed up at times as well but I have only myself to blame because certain activities in my life are until 11pm or even 12 so a couple of hours in the afternoon is needed... Bad side to that though is my body wanting a kip on Saturday's when I don't want to...

I also am knackered as I have do a massive walk this week after 2 week break. I am struggling to do it.

The job need balancing workload. But this is Royal Mail.

All I want is medium walk and medium load so I finished at reasonable time.

All I want is to work to my time every day but it's getting more and more difficult with the increased workload.

And I sleep everyday whenever I get home (strangely I even do the same thing on my day off and Sundays, just a habit I think)

Maybe you need to be doing 'certain activities' a bit earlier and getting a good nights sleep afterwards.

got my respect if you can do that , when I was quite young we used to see them all traveling back from Wigan Casino Overnighters and some needed help from their mate Billy Whizz back then . Ok we laughed a bit at the the big flared trousers etc but we respected what they were into etc .

Did a turn at behind the bar St Georges Hall Blackburn for one of those do's , one of the girls who was more used to doing idiot's outing saturday night shifts asked about getting security for drunk , violent , obnoxious etc customers . She was assured that she wouldn't need any bouncers .

we still have a drugs problem at the Twisted Wheel - but now it's glucosamine and cod liver oil tablets. Quite a few original members from the '60's are still up for it and a lot of the Wigan Casino regulars provide a younger layer but the "northern" soul genre has massive support nowadays and we get coaches from all over the place for a lot of the friday night sessions Check the site link for pix and details http://www.twistedwheel.net/

I spent most of the 80's and some of the 90's going to Allnighters every weekend whilst doing this job, there is no way I could do it now with the workload, maybe get to one every 6 months now.
