The Virgin Media O2 redundancies show the CWU should not have trusted Royal Mail

Virgin Media O2 is laying off 10% of its workforce, amid a mountain of debt – yet oddly, they also have made billions in profits, and paid over £1bn in dividends to shareholders. Yet the Communication Workers Union (CWU) has issued a tepid response at best. This is probably because it looks like it made an error of judgement months ago over a pay deal with the company. Moreover, it sends a warning to the other deal the CWU has just agreed with Royal Mail – because if Virgin Media O2 can strike a pay deal with the CWU and then lay off countless staff – Royal Mail could well do similar.

Hopefully ,not many years to retirement,im doing as little as possible now it would be in their interests to get rid of us older one's who don't give a toss anymore. Its all wrong that companies can make these vast profits and take billions out of the company and give it all away to shareholders whilst simultaneously trying to save a 'few pennies' by cutting staff on the shop floor. But that is ultimately what they do and I was aware of the no compulsory redundancies in the BLT&G wrap agreement but it ends in just 2 years!! And Royal Mail have already jumped the gun by deliberately reducing the hours in the callers office and extending the sick policy to include absences before the new changes come in.

What is happening in Virgin Media also happened with BT who also had a below inflation pay deal courtesy of the CWU. It was argued that it would prevent job losses but it didn't because they announced that 50,000 staff would be culled by 2030 due to new technology, even though it had just made profits of £1.9 billion.

36 and been here 14 years now and feel exactly the same. I’m mortgaged up to my eyeballs with two kids but if they sack me tomorrow I think I would feel a sense of relief. I used to care about the bullying and intimidation from managers and always tried my best to complete, but the workload and pressure now is so unbearable I’ve completely given up. I now go in on time, take break and hand quarter of a delivery back routinely so I can finish on time. Feel like I’ve become a nuisance to management and probably have a target on my back but f**k it all the place is a complete shithole now anyway and will continue to get worse.
Also left the union, I won’t pay towards that bald twats obscene wages anymore.

Here here ! I totally agree. Been in the job nearly 40 years and alway gone home feeling I’ve put a good days graft in. Never had an easy life always grafted but now I’ve given up. I have nearly 2000 calls and in an area which is 70% hills and long drives. If you run it it will still take over 7 hour to just deliver without the prep. It’s even broken the young runners but has it been altered yet? Of course not. I’m totally exhausted so I go in on time, take my break on time, go home on time and even need to use the trolley more now as the aches and pains are coming fast.

To think I ran the marathon in April so I’m not an old unfit overweight lazy postie but they have physically and mentally broken not only me but most of my office. Looking for a new job everyday and wishing the time away. I have a hgv but I really didn’t want to go sitting in all that traffic and doing all different shifts at my age. I would love to work for company that cared and appreciated you.

It's been said many times but we are just a number.

The posties that are still coming in early, trying to rush round trying to do job and finish are just going to burn themselves out. There's no point anyway now as they have PDAs monitoring our every move.

It doesn't bother me to leave work. What I don't understand are coms that occasionally give you a hard time over it. As if they would do our job!!

People should have been making more of a fuss when privatisation was on the cards. I can’t recall there being anywhere near as much passion on these boards as there is for this agreement vote and the aftermath, compared to the muted response made then.

Not sure any union can stop a company making staff redundant if that's what they intend doing? Given that Virgin media & O2 merged recently it was inevitable their would be job cuts.

Absolutely right mate. Very little was done during that proposal. We should have really striked hard then for weeks on end to discourage any investor interest. I think a lot were subdued by free share allocations. I would hand them back in a heart beat to return to realistic targets and a job that pride really did and could play a part in.

What they "see" is hundreds of keyboard warriors on social media undermining their own union and "saying" they'll leave.

That's what managers are talking about. The question is what do you hope to achieve by these constant rants?

If I was cynical I would question whether some of them actually are managers because the only people who really gain anything from undermining a union are the employers, they like division because that's the real weak point not whether the members accept or reject a deal.

If Royal Mail feels they can do what they like it will be because they believe we are divided and rants like yours give them that idea.
