Royal Mail workers accept 10% pay increase

Royal Mail workers represented by the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have accepted a three-year pay deal which will see their salary jump by 6% in 2023.

Pay for postal service workers will then rise by a further 2% in April 2024. Adding this to the 2% wage increase staff received earlier this year it means workers receive a total 10% pay rise.

Over 75% of CWU members voted in favour of the deal, which introduces benefits like later start times from 2024 onwards, changes to sick pay and an assurance of no compulsory redundancies.

From autumn 2023, staff will be required to work with more seasonal patterns, doing more hours in the busier periods like Christmas and less in quieter times like during summer.

Part of the deal also introduces Sunday work as a requirement for any new employee contracts.

“The agreement provides Royal Mail a platform for the next phase of stabilising the business whilst continuing to drive efficiencies and change,” said a Royal Mail spokesman.

The agreement comes after CWU members launched a series of strikes over the last year in protest over pay.

With one round of industrial action taking place in December, the strikes caused severe problems over Christmas.

Shares in Royal Mail's owner International Distributions Services PLC (LSE:IDS) rose 2.6% in early Wednesday trading, having opened at around 234p.

Suppose having our sick pay decimated is also a benefit and the incredibly generous 2% we received last year, not earlier this year as they have stated, along with the 6% this year is really going to go far due to inflation.
