Funny how a non driver was off last week and the van share job failed with two drivers on it.

Honestly dont know why anyone would want to drive for this company every work time learnings the same every other day in ours, drivers being threatened with conduct for not doing van checks or speeding or some other misdemeanor much better being non driver no hassle or responsibility only bigger loops which isn't to bad.
It's in the contract ie after 2010 everyone needs a driving licence.
So they can’t just get rid of people who started before that who don’t drive?
What %/number of staff are there in DOs who started before 2010?
Thats a large % in our office although theres only about 5 of us dont drive.
Which also surprises me that RM have never forced through that change that you must be a driver. In this day and age, with letter volumes so low, anyone who can’t drive for what is effectively a parcel company, isn’t fit for purpose.

Maybe the next revision/agreement they will go after that 5%.
In what way do you think they will come after us filthy, offer v.r perhaps or give us a deadline to be able yo drive?
More likely a deadline, if they were to enforce it. Seems they are forcing through everything else.
Like somebody else has mentioned though, I don’t think it will happen. I don’t know what the percentage of current posties that can’t drive is but the number will eventually be close to zero anyway so they’ll probably just leave it…

But still wouldn’t surprise me.

are they going to pay for driving lessons then ?

There are some mental posts on here and this is one of them.

Imagine sacking someone because they don’t drive when their contract doesn’t state it.

In my office that’s fairly large , probs 150 or so deliveries, maybe 10 don’t drive and have never driven and have done 20 plus years.

They can be accommodated and p&l isn’t going anywhere anytime soon so it’s all a bit pointless.

Just another attempt to turn people against each other.

I think it'll go down to how much they'd have to pay out in Employment Tribunals. If the economics works out for them, I could see them just forcing it though if they think it's financially worth it

All I’m saying is RM seem be forcing through whatever they want. There is a reason they don’t employ non drivers anymore.
If RM decide to go to a five day (mom-fri) delivery then maybe they will go down that route otherwise the non drivers will get weekends off and the drivers won’t.
But also, if, like some people on here have predicted, RM split into two entities (parcels and letters) then the letter entity is doomed to lose money and it would probably be easier for them to rip up contracts? Let the letter side go bankrupt….

Personally I think I wouldn’t put it past them. The sick pay changes and keeping us out for longer in the heat prove they actually don’t care.

That’s the bottom line. If they deem the changes necessary they could go down the employment tribunal route.
Suppose it depends on the long term changes they want.
I think at the minute if you get banned from driving or can’t drive for medical reasons then normally the DOM can accommodate that.

As I’ve said previously there is still plenty of work for non drivers to do. I’m a driver but I picked a HCT delivery as I don’t want to drive anymore.

a few in my office got taken off driving cause they were deemed dangerous and another relatively new starter can only drive automatic so they are now a non driver.

It’s a none issue as you can’t get a job on delivery without a license and I doubt even the management are stupid enough to implement a policy like this.

In future they will only take on new employees who have driving licenses so over the years the number of non drivers will dwindle.
In the meantime non drivers will be employed as van assistants and in back office roles, there won't be any need to force people to drive.
If they wanted to get the numbers down faster, they could leave those new style VR packages permanently on the table for any non-driver to walk into the office and ask for.

If the fine/penalty they'd have to pay from an employment tribunal is cheap enough in their eyes then I can see RM forcing it through. My guess is that eventually RM will want to have it so that (in theory) any staff member in a DO can do any walk. That's not possible atm as you have non-drivers

If they wanted to make all duties singleton parcels and loops then they could pay off the non drivers statutory redundancy if they don’t get licenced but that probably won’t happen as they are clinging on to every last rusty combo in the fleet with no sign of new vans being added.

I know my office is based in Trumpton but we must have gotten lucky as we still have new vans coming in. The AC in the electric vans has been a godsend this summer.
