DISABLED workers are being asked to apply for jobs as postmen, sales reps and even door staff by the company which controversially closed their York factory.

Furious unions and jobless employees at the city's doomed Remploy site have branded the offer by the firm's bosses as "hurtful" as it emerged that many of the positions they are being advised to look at are offering merely the minimum wage or just a handful of hours of weekly work.

The Redeness Street factory closed last week as part of a Government cost-cutting exercise after an impassioned and emotional campaign to save it, with many of the 51 workers who had sheltered employment there now trying to find other jobs through Remploy.

But the list of York vacancies - also including security guards, traffic planners, landscape gardeners and ice-cream van drivers - has been met with disbelief after being sent to the GMB union, which says most of the roles are unsuitable, not as well-paid and Remploy's staff, who have physical or learning problems, have no chance of getting them.

"Remploy must really be having a laugh at the expense of our disabled members," said national officer Phil Davies, who has called on the company's human resources executive director Anne Jessopp to resign.

"The hours of work are as low as 12 per week, pay is down to the minimum rate of £5.52 per hour, and the jobs range from door staff to conveyancing secretaries - in fact, everything but brain surgeons and concert pianists.

"Most of these would be difficult for a non-disabled person to apply for because they require considerable training. Are Remploy forgetting that some of their York employees have learning difficulties and mental health issues? To say these jobs are suitable for disabled people is misleading, hurtful and downright dishonest."

A Remploy spokeswoman said: "It's disappointing to see our trade union colleagues' repeated claims about what disabled people can't do, rather than focusing on their considerable skills and abilities. The minute you assume somebody cannot find work in the outside world, you will ensure they don't. Last year, Remploy found jobs with other companies for more than 5,000 disabled people who have the same range of disabilities as our employees."

Work as doorstaff? do they mean doorstaff as in bouncers? i used to do it ten years ago and it can be a very violent scary thing to do depending on the idiot?/group you have to approach defo not the job for a disabled person

Not if they have the appropriate tools I think would be Remploys response.

£5.52 ph to put people out of pubs & clubs ???, ,I wonder why there's vacancies -not , people in combocrasher's game got out because at one time if somebody got put out they took it on the chin , but not anymore .

Security is a cut throat true blue business full stop. Security ultra long hours would put some of those people in Hospital, that's if they haven't been already put there by scroats whilst working as doormen , then they'd back to square one when they come out again. Stupid Woman !

New Labour initially dropped all these cuts -something to do with the Liebour Conference being televised and the top union delegates giving Liebour a rough time ..Funny how they can find the money for banks , consultants , non jobs ,dodgy PPP , PFI , IT projects , Lieton & Dozier , failed Metronet in London etc ,etc ,etc
