Shift patterns for newbie

Hello all, I officially join the Royal Mail family next month after applying for “Delivery person with Driving”.

During the application and interview process , it appears the job was for LATs on an afternoon shift.

However when I got my call to let me know I had the job, I was told my rota and shift patterns would be given to me on my first day. Not helpful with childcare for that first week.

Anybody know what the shift patterns start and finish times are likely to be ? 30 hour contract 5 days a week.

You will be starting from between 5am to 1pm.
Finishing between 12noon to 7pm.
I doubt you will get a fixed term position time wise but will probably be pushed from pillar to post!
You can beg for a child friendly duty, but don’t hold much hope.
Much better jobs out there, certainly for newbies.
I would not want to be starting now!

When enquiring with your manager about your shift patterns, do mention that you understood Royal Mail could provide “family friendly” working patterns.

This attitude from some here who think this is asking too much is exactly a drive to the bottom of the employment heap. Jesus. It's just a basic employee request for reasonable notice.What does it say in the contract you have signed? If no times in the contract or you've not signed, stick with what you were told and tell them in an email that you'll be turning up at X and leaving at y and say you need X weeks/days notice to sort out childcare. Unfortunately Royal Mail will take and take unless you set the ground rules. Don't listen to the abused who have become abusers in the earlier posts on here. Your real life work colleagues will lovely. Local Management are penny pinching here and they want you only the second they can use you for deffo and they don't know til the day cos they can't organise a storm in a teacup. However they, ie the delivery office manager, can't argue as I'm sure you mentioned this at interview and therefore RM have full knowledge of the situation for you. You need to look for other work I'm afraid or grow some balls quick as you can and just to stand up for what time you have available for RM and what notice you require. Oh and join the union as soon as you can and if you get nowhere get your local rep on it. It is nothing personal either Royal Mail always always use and abuse new starters.

Don't bother with joining the CWU until you can work out if the rep is good or not, as the latter now seems to be the norm.

As others have said you need to set the ground rules not let RM call the shots, or they'll have you working 7 to 7 without any breaks!

Have you got a phone number for the office you will be working at? Maybe give them a call and explain who you are and tell them your start date and ask if they can advise you what your schedule will be for your first week.

Every office will have its own arrangements but at ours all part timers have the same start and finish times so they may be able to tell you the shift start and finish times in advance. Knowing your days off will be harder. Each duty will have a different rest day and as a reserve you probably won’t find out until late in the week what duty you will be doing the following week and what your rest day will be for that week.

You’ll find there’s a number of grumpy sods at Royal Mail, looks like you’ve already met one of those cretins in this thread. Just ignore them. On my very first day, the first colleague who spoke to me uttered the words ‘who the fcuk are you and why the fcuk have you come to work here?’ to me. We have a real mix of workers here but if anything it keeps it interesting.
