How long does this go on?

Post by pieoftheday »

How long do major shareholders of RM let's this business carry on like this? Apparently RM isnt making any money ,apparently its losing millions so when do they say ffks give the workers something and let's get making money so we can get our dividends!! I know major shareholders might be wealthy individuals or investment bodies that might not need their dividends but I'm sure they want them?

To try and get this thread back on topic…

It’s not just dividends that make major shareholders money. Consider vulture capitalism and what that could do to Royal Mail.

The way I see it, RM currently has a steady cash flow (letters may be declining but parcels has potential to grow and be very profitable, and the D2Ds probably earn them a bit however much we in delivery dislike them) and RM is also asset rich (land, buildings, vans, lorries, sorting machines, smaller equipment, a hundred million elastic bands, heck...just the scrap metal price of all the yorks and frames etc. and rarer metals (nickel, manganese, cobalt, and lithium) in the PDA batteries, if you couldn’t sell them as is – though who would want the PDAs as they are now right?).

If RM is run into the ground – and it’s no where near there at the moment as a business despite what we see day to day – then it becomes a playground for the vulture capitalist. If they get in, then they don’t want pence per share as the daily market price fluctuates. They will restructure RM so they are making millions in a very short period of time. The key thing to remember with vulture capitalism/ capitalists (VCs from now on) is that they have to buy very low in order to make money. Hence, they really do want the company to get into trouble first for the VC lot to make the most money - hence they'll be very happy with the delays and company problems.

How do VCs make money? Generally they’ll borrow money, buy a company, reduce the workforce, asset strip and sell off parts of the business and start putting all the debt on that company – not them or their company but RM.

So RM own a lot of land that offices are sat on? Worth millions? Sell it to a third-party and let RM rent it back – it’s being rented back to RM not the VCs. The VCs makes hundreds of millions in a weeks but RM now has yearly escalating rent to pay on all its estates. Where does the money from the sale of the land go? Not to RM or for reinvestment. It will almost seem to disappear...like COVID profits.

Vans need to be electric? Sell all the vans – probably for not a lot compared to the other assets – and get a company to lease electric vans to RM for a premium. Everything marked up. One new tyre? £550 + VAT + fitting etc. from the company that won the contract to supply fleet services to RM.

RM will be saddled with debt but the VCs don’t mind. They will have bought RM with a leveraged buyout – they borrowed the money to buy RM and put the loan on RM to pay back. They win all the time and they even win if the company ultimately goes under... Look at Toys R Us. The company’s sales flat-lined because of competition from the likes of Walmart, it was bought out, and then Amazon.com hit them very hard in the toys sector. The company failed to modernise and went bankrupt. What happened to the firms involved in the leveraged buyout? Fear not...they are all doing nicely and ticking along however, Toys R Us is gone forever.

All of the above is of course worse case scenario. It may never get that far but it will be in the playbook listed as, for example, “Plan D”. The current deal is perhaps “Plan A” for RM. If that is unacceptable let’s just hope that we can settle on something before “Plan D” starts being considered.

Currently we don’t know what the new CEO will be focused on, and we have a union leadership that doesn’t know which way to jump and is looking clumsy in its actions.

Frankly it's a complete mess and there is no trust on either side. Even if there is a deal it really doesn't seem like there is a penalty if it's not honoured.

Apart from you mentioning it twice on different threads - no.

Can't see RM giving us 6% when the 'agreement' has not been agreed and they could be earning probably 5% interest on that
cash on the money markets somewhere.

Till postal workers come to their senses and support the decent pay settlement the CWU negotiated for them, in the back drop to a Recession, Automation and A1.

Jobs are not ten a penny anymore, and prolonged industrial action and pay stalemate kills a company, and undermines the integrity of their own union, the CWU in this case.

This could all have been settled long time ago bar for the coterie of loudmouth Bolshi reps and antagonists who have hidden agendas and axes to grind with their own union and Royal Mail :no no

Remember what Arthur Scargill did to the poor Miners, don't let Postal Workers suffer the same dreadful fate :cuppa
