When I used to work in delivery, I think the walks were based around three and a half hours. That was long enough.
I do agree with a lot of what you say, but not on this.
That is fine, but how are you filling the rest of your day with a 3.5 hour walk? There isn’t four hours of indoor work to do, so are you proposing we all move to part time hours?

The business has shifted from a workforce that was largely full-time to one that is now mainly part-time. There are plenty of part-timers in our office doing indoor overtime to make their hours up to full-time but will that be the case in the future?

The Union has always wanted a shorter working week because they knew that there would be a reduction in the indoor work due to automation and they wanted to try and offset the larger outdoor span. Unfortunately, due to the revisions which have made our duties even bigger I've come to terms that this is not going to be the case.

So from a business point of view:

Later starts due to automation - tick
Bigger duties to offset the lack of indoor work - tick
Later finish times to ensure that you work all the hours that you are paid for - tick

Royal Mail have got everything that they have wanted from this deal....and more

Working more hours in winter when we are busier  - tick
Automation and the reduction in mail volumes are pretty much the main issues. Although increasing duty sizes does impact on individual prep time of course. I just see no way around maintaining full time contracts unless you increase outdoor working time or find other indoor work to do.

Perhaps the way forward, is to only employ part time new starters, so as legacy workers on longer hours, do all of the indoor work (part timers just turn up and collect their delivery and go) but the union would never agree to this, as it would decimate CWU membership long term. It is RM’s wet dream though of course. Then you have the issue on what happens when all the full timers reach the end of their careers and leave, with only part timers remaining.

We had a manager tell us that before long there would be no IPS to do in the morning there would just be maybe a few missorts to clear up, that was about 15 years ago, we do more IPS now than we did back then :nana

Yes but you aren’t doing 4 1/2 hours of indoor work. In regards the person I was quoting, if you think that a 3.5 hour delivery span is still realistic, how do you fill the rest of a full time working day?

There certainly isnt 4 1/2 hours of indoor work,we have 2 to 2 1/2 depending on the length of shift. If it's a 7am start it can often be a struggle to get out for 10am, having taken a 20 minute break
