Well that would be me out of a job  Unless I've committed a CRIMINAL OFFENSE then I'll not give my (biometric) details to a government that is likely to lose them.

For you are quite right as this ID CARD as i understand it is a whole database that is to be linked to agency's of the state! But if this was to fall in the wrong hand's or be used by future government's who hold opinon's not of our own we could all find ourself's in big trouble!. And if that was not bad enough the state could make you persona non grata by the simple expedient of revocation of your ID CARD!. FOR I SAY STOP THIS MADNESS BEFORE IT GOES TO FAR!.NO TO ID CARD'S!.

They CLAIM that the only extra information (beyond that for Passports), will be our fingerprints. Now why do I find that hard to believe? :hmmmm

Even if that IS true. The fact is, that all a fraudstar would need to do, is steal your ID card. Then hack into the database, replace your fingerprint with theirs, and they would replace you. How could we prove that we are who we say we are, if there is someone else, with a biometric ID card, or Passport, who says that THEY are you?
Who would the authorities believe?

I don't trust the Government with the data they ALREADY have on me. Now, they want to add my fingerprint, to make it more secure (in their eyes). Their data security is severely flawed, and they want to treat these cards and biometric passports as a more reliable proof of who we are. They are completely mad, if they think that I will have either the card, or Passport, unless it becomes a Legal requirement.

this is how they will force it rthrough by stealth.
in scenarios where you need ID you will find less and less places will accept anything but the id card.

so say your getting a mortgage and the lender states they only accept ID cards as proof of identity.
your pretty much screwed.
most likely the bulk of government stuff requiring ID will be whittled down to the accepted ID card

Yes they said a few years ago the only way you would get state benefits is if you had the new Biometric ID Card when it comes in. This probably will include the State Pension.

I have to add that as an Ex-serviceman I have no problem with ID Cards per see. Its all the hype and waffle, lack of transparency, and secureness of data that has me worried. Also I don't like the idea we have to pay for it, isn't that why we pay taxes.

Salmond moves to block new ID cards in Scotland

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/news/di ... otland.php

Alex Salmond's government is on a collision course with Westminster over the introduction of ID cards, making clear that it will seek to stop a "compulsory scheme by stealth" operating north of the border.

The Herald was told the First Minister had "serious concerns" over the policy's harmful effects on civil liberties while producing no tangible benefit to security. Enforcement by London was likened to the political storm caused by the imposition of the poll tax by Margaret Thatcher.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill is to make urgent representations to Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, expressing Holyrood's "vehement opposition" to Gordon Brown's flagship scheme.

If it were successfully blocked in Scotland, then its integrity would be seriously undermined for the rest of the UK, given that the Prime Minister believes nationwide ID cards will be effective in combating terrorism, organised crime, identity fraud and illegal immigration.

The Liberal Democrats aired their strong opposition to the ID cards scheme yesterday while civil liberties groups said it would be disastrous for people's privacy and race relations. The Conservatives pledged that if they came to power, they would scrap the "utterly discredited" project.

Yesterday, Ms Smith, in announcing revised plans, boasted how most Britons would have a biometric identity card by 2017. She stressed she wanted as many people as possible to "enjoy the two key benefits of the National Identity Scheme - improved protection and greater convenience".

The Secretary of State added: "We will be able to better protect ourselves against identity fraud as well as protecting our communities against crime, illegal immigration and terrorism. It will help us to prove our identity in the course of our daily lives when travelling, opening a bank account, applying for a new job or accessing government services."

The first people to be compelled to get ID cards in the UK will be non-EU nationals. Next year, they will be issued to some people with "sensitive jobs" such as staff at airports and power stations. From 2010, young people will be able to volunteer for the cards and the following year all passport applicants will be automatically registered, having the option of choosing to have a passport, ID card or both.

However, critics believe the UK Government's programme is compulsion "by stealth". They fear millions of Britons could be forced to apply for an ID card because of their jobs while another concern is that students will have to have an ID card to open bank accounts and obtain loans.

Last night, a Scottish Government spokesman claimed the supposed voluntary scheme for most Britons was "a compulsory one in all but name". He told The Herald: "We are opposed to the concept of compulsory ID cards. We feel the UK Government is attempting to introduce this measure by stealth. We will be making representations to them to make clear our vehement opposition to it."

Under the previous and present Edinburgh administrations, it has been made clear ID cards will not be needed to access public services.

The spokesman stressed how it was not just the Scottish Government but also the Scottish Parliament which had "no desire" to see an ID card scheme.

Earlier, when the Prime Minister's spokesman was asked if he thought the UK Government would encounter difficulties with the Scottish Government over the proposed ID card scheme, he replied he had "no reason to believe" this would be the case and that there were "well-established mechanisms" for discussing the issue with Edinburgh

Personally I wouldnt mind having an ID Card....

If it would remove some of the hassle you get when youre applying for new jobs ("Please bring 928 forms of ID, including a letter from the person who runs your local swimming baths, a photo of you doing the tango in Asda, signed by a local buddhist monk ..... etc etc"), or applying for a driving licence, and all of those things then I cant really see the real problem?

Its not like they couldnt easily get the information they want anyway, its just bringing it all to a central location making it easier to get to. Plus.... who cares if they have your finger prints? Its not like theyre going to be out dusting down lamposts to find out where youve been - theyve got CCTV for that :D

It was originally the Sheffield Stud's idea -Blunkett -he's always plugging it in his p*** poor column in that comic , The Sun , nothing to do of course with Blunkett being on the board of a American company that would capitalize on the introduction of these cards .

They are all at it , Nurse Ratchett or Patronizing Pat Hewitt is on the Boots the Chemist Board , there's plans for walk in NHS centres in their shops . The Grinning Wonder , His Toniness is certainly making Hay when the Sun Shines trading on all his connections for the Banks etc.
