Royal Mail going bust is NEVER going to happen
Royal Mail going bust is NEVER going to happen. There are a number of reasons for this.
1. There is not a single civilised democracy that doesn't have a postal operator - We will not be the first.
2. The country would not allow a 500 year institution go to the wall.
3. This is the most important reason.
Whenever a major company / institution gets into financial trouble the government looks at a certain criteria -
ie - Is it in the the publics interest
Is it in the country's interest
Is it in the taxpayers interest
The answer is YES , YES and YES
Royal Mails wage bill is more than 5.5 billion pounds a year.
More than 1.2 billion is payed in taxes by the workforce (PAYE) equating to more than £3 million a day.
Even if we were losing 1 million a day the government coffers would still swell by 900 million a year.
Economics don't lie - the government treasury is certainly not stupid.
100000+ workers on benefits is never going to happen.
This will be a hard pill to swallow for all you doomsters - a reality check is needed.

The Government will not let Royal Mail go into administration, but what will come out the other side will not look good.
There will be thousands of job losses and our terms and conditions now will look fantastic to what will happen.

I have no doubt the vast majority would take a chance on the government over a private dictatorship hellbent on destroying all our t&c.sweepster70 wrote: ↑30 Apr 2023, 00:30The Government will not let Royal Mail go into administration, but what will come out the other side will not look good.

Under the USO, Royal Mail cannot put itself into administration. It's the Government who decide.

Some other reasons why the company will not go into administration.
1. GLS And RM are part of the same company, despite what they like say. As such, any talk of administration will involve looking at the viability of both companies as a whole. Overall, the company is set to be making a profit of around £50m if you believe the so called losses RM claim. Its a bit like someone trying to claim unemployment benefit whilst having another full time job.
2. RM would have to open its books, which would likely show such poor financial management that the board and Thompson would never get a job again. so it would be in their own self interest to keep quite. For that reason I believe its nothing but a bluff from some very unpleasant chancers anyway.

Re: Royal Mail going bust is NEVER going to happen
I never took the threat seriously. If a company is bankrupt then they are put in to administration. It was yet another hollow threat during the dirty 'negotiation' we had to painfully watch. Our bluff was called again and again and we have lost this one.
I'm gutted about it.
However, if I see things going back to normal and see reps and managers laughing and joking together in my office I will seriously consider my membership.
Relations will never be the same on the shop floor again for me. I'm not going to rant on how to vote, that is everyone's personal choice. Cheers.

If it came to it would we go into administration or would they consider renationalising us? Quality of service is now bad thanks to privatisation and we proved ourselves to be an essential service in the pandemic? Not to mention the fact that all the CEO's we have had since we went private have turned out to be incompetent!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Re: Royal Mail going bust is NEVER going to happen
I'm no expert on anything but as far as if the government took us back why would our terms and conditions be destroyed.....Are the government known to run company's on minimum wage with terrible conditions and allow and encourage bullying and harassment. Not being sarcastic genuine question.I would have thought that if they did it would stay much the same as we are at just now with maybe a bit less pressure to be striving for every penny of profit.

Re: Royal Mail going bust is NEVER going to happen
For Royal Mail to go into administration they would need to show that it has significant losses and cannot sustain itself to the government who makes the final decision.
This really isn't the case for a number of reasons:
1. IDS also contains GLS which is very profitable
2. IDS made record profits of £786 million last year and over half of that was made by Royal Mail. In other words it has proven to be profitable. Don't forget that the government allowed Royal Mail to continue operating during COVID and gave them plenty of business with COVID kits and allowed them a day off the USO
This is why Royal Mail are so keen to make this permanent. Unfortunately the government said it was a temporary measure and have knocked them back over taking a day off the USO at least twice
3. A senior RM board member admitted that RM has £1.7 billion in available liquidity. The company actually has a very strong balance sheet and plenty of assets...
4. The company have said that strike action has been damaging costing the company around £200 million of around £450-550 million of financial losses. The financial results are due to be released when our ballot papers are despatched. It is likely to show a really black picture of our financial position; and it is entirely deliberate.
5. For a company to make record profits, give all the money away to shareholders and then say next year that they have made record losses raised big questions on the directors running the company and gross mismanagement.
6. Royal Mail have said the strikes have cost around £200 million of predicted £450-550 million of losses. Well, look at it this way
- we have not striked since Xmas eve
- we have made duties bigger and failed the USO
- we have raised the price of postage stamps
- we have got rid of vans
- parcel volumes are still high
Honestly I don't believe that we are currently losing that much money every day RIGHT NOW
And the union are using the companys financial position to sell us a crap deal!!!
Vote NO
There is a better deal out there in terms of money and for better terms and conditions
