It’s not the union that is the problem, it’s the bureaucrats and officials that are running it.

All the senior officials from Ward,PEC down to the Div reps have absolutely no understanding of day to day life of the average CWU member.

At what point during this dispute did any of the above or the branches ask for the views of the members from the shop floor with regards to what action to take and what could possibly be acceptable agreement wise? - They didn’t not once!

The processes we use are outdated. Why in the internet age do the CWU waste vast sums of money dragging reps and officials (train fares, hotel bills) to tell them something that could be done via zoom?? The same goes for conference a complete and utter waste of the members subs.

Since I’ve been a member the union has changed from being a grassroots organisation to an autocratic top down organisation.

Whatever the outcome of this dispute I am certain we need a union but it has to be one that is effective,democratic and accountable which the CWU has not been for a long time.

Excellent post - totally agree. They waste vast sums of money because they can without any accountability. It is time for all their wages and all expenses to be published and scrutinised by their paymasters - us. I will be leaving after the vote.

As expected our Union bloke has tried to give us the hard sell, but there's far too many grey areas in the deal for me to agree to. For a start, Royal Mail and now the CWU leaders are using the financial situation of the company as leverage in the deal. I personally think this is bullsh*t.

The best example I can give you is when Royal Mail was allegedly losing over a million pounds a day when Leighton and Crozier was in charge, and this current board are using the similar tactics. What the board are doing now is making deliveries bigger, not paying out overtime to get duties covered on a daily basis, putting the price of postage up more than inflation and running down the service levels. Back in the day they knew when audits arrived the management are pre-warned and pull out all the stops to get a clear office. Once this board gets the changes and the deal that they want it won't be long before the magic money tree comes falling......only this time we won't be getting a guaranteed bonus of £1,074 but a 20% share of whatever the Royal Mail board decides. We might get something or the board might get greedy and we get nothing because that's how these colleague shares can work. If I recall from the last time we got nothing.

And there are plenty of statements that say wishful things in this deal like "we will commit to having a full time workforce" or "we will commit to a shorter working week" but these are just union aspirations that we know the company will ignore like they have in previous deals. It's like a commitment not to have a gig economy yet Royal Mail have already started new staff on less pay, terms and conditions although the union have said that they will try to level them up wherever possible.

The last letter delivery time has been put at 16.30 but the union are suggesting that the majority will finish at 15.30. Are they purposely trying to get us to agree the deal but get us conditioned to the possibility of an even later finish?? We need something in black and white rather than what's in grey. It's obvious to me that we are being sold out here and I wouldn't be surprised that we end up moving nearer to a 2-3 hour finish time that Royal Mail proposed in the future. That's only going by what those who work in mail centres expect when these parcel super hubs are up and running at full speed. The union make a big deal of the no compulsory redundancies for the life expectancy of this deal. But the deal is only for 2 years. Will we expect to see more changes happening by then??

You would have to be mad to leave the union if these changes come in. They are going to use every trick in the book, to replace old legacy workers with people signing up for these new contracts. You will need them to watch your back even more.

All legacy payments should have been removed and redistributed to the entire work force
