I'd ask why are RM so hung up on it?rambo1 wrote: ↑01 Apr 2023, 09:19Why are people so hung up on this one? How many of us that have been here 20+yrs start and finish at the same time now as we used to when we started? I for one now start on average 3 hrs later now than I used to then. Used to be finished by 10.30 on a Saturday, now its 3.30pm. we have all changed over the yrs, why such a pushback on more? Have the Union actually surveyed their member's views on this? Are people seriously thinking they can walk into another job with exactly the same start and finish time as they have now? Or a supermarket job with no Sunday working?

Re: Changing start and finish time
They have made 2 of our days 7hr days so now they only pay us for a 30 minute break on these days,so now we get paid 20 mins less a week so about 4 quid less now than before revision,so i am now working on a pay cut, sometimes i do question the point of the union. So CWU that inflation 10% payrise has now become 11% to make up for my paycut ,do not come back with anything less or its a big NO from me.

Isn’t it September when they are really going to hit us with later start times.

Re: Changing start and finish time
Exactly this if its a straight 9-5 or 10-6 job and with the you don't need anymore payrises mantra the job just morphs into another gig economy job thats why as crap as some people think the union are its the only thing putting any resistance to the money men.Acca Dacca wrote: ↑01 Apr 2023, 10:21Simple for me
An earlier finish than the typical 9-5 as well as our hourly rate being a good bit better than minimum wage was the counterbalance to doing such a physical job every day. It was one of the big perks.
Now they want us to be out walking for longer, later and for a wage that minimum wage has almost caught up with
There will be few “perks of the job” left
Royal Mail will struggle to retain and recruit if they go down the path they want. That’s a guarantee.

"It doesn't bother me, so why should it bother you?"
Later starts and finishes take me an hour longer in travelling. Commuting costs enough. It also adds around 30 - 40 minutes in travel onto the round.
Dropping parcels at the PO at the end of a shift becomes a nightmare parking and getting seen. Childcare becomes a real pain. I can get less personal stuff done in my day.

So the job will not be worth it to you or many others and they will leave and more work will need to be done by the few and fewer while ass wipes at the top get the renumeration that you all earned them. Thing is times are changing We cannot stand by the failures of politicians and big business at our expense anymore times have changed and we will never forget the injustice in this world made by a few and inflicted upon us all!Foxel wrote: ↑01 Apr 2023, 17:28"It doesn't bother me, so why should it bother you?"![]()

I remember starting at 5am and finishing well before dinnertime and when they brought in single daily delivery it meant starting a bit later, even though they reduced the number of duties and we were delivering much bigger rounds.
But RM new ways of working will mean that we will be starting work when our competitors are already out delivering. Plus Royal Mail are also expecting us to work outdoors for longer.
What the company really should be doing is recruit more LAT evening parcel drivers instead of moving the entire operation backwards because it's not affecting when we receive our mech. If the company really don't see this as being cost effective long term then I would much prefer to work an occasional late shift rather than be expected to work something like a 9 to 5 every single day of the week. Perhaps they could also include an additional shift supplement for those that work a later shift?
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Re: Changing start and finish time
I think that RM will make start and finish times later, as it'll save them some money on shift allowances and it'll mean less lorries need. Where a MC might currently get two runs in from a given RDC, an early one and a late run. RM might start sending the later one later and with the contents of the former early run as wellpostslippete wrote: ↑01 Apr 2023, 18:46Acca Dacca wrote: ↑01 Apr 2023, 10:21Simple for me

Re: Changing start and finish time
You can't base the shift times of a multi million pound business on the fact that some of the workforce say "but I've got kids to pick up".
Later start times are the one thing the Union should give up fighting about. In my opinion. There's absolutely no good reason for us starting at 6am.

Precisely because of those changes. At every turn the company gets what it wants. Inevitably there emerges a desire to draw a line in the sand, no matter how trivial the proposal at hand.
The machine stops.

Re: Changing start and finish time
A lot of the changes that Royal Mail are trying to force through are just going to make us even more unproductive. Take later start times for example. We will probably have to deliver all the Specials first and then face rush hour traffic on the way back; and who wants to do any additional overtime if they are finishing in the dark? Ah well, we are already failing the USO on a daily basis now with bigger duties so what difference does it make if the service is further eroded.
Commercially, it really doesn't make any sense for us to completely abandon the AM delivery period when our competitors are out delivering.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
