Women must act to get representation

Unison National Equalities Organiser Gloria Mills declared that for too long the power had been in the hands of men while responsibility remained with women.

Addressing the CWU Women’s conference in Belfast, Gloria called for no area to be ruled off limits for the women.

She recalled how Unison had adopted the principal of proportionality in 1993. “We wanted to shift the balance of power in a union whose membership was made up of 73 per cent women,â€

Wonderfully strange statement from our resident political officer.

Why?

When it comes to voting for equality officer if more than one nommination is submitted for the post, the canidates views on the recent flexibilty deal will not influence who i vote for. Indeed in giving their reasons for wishing to stand for election to the post of equality officer i doubt very much that they will give their views as it will be irrelevant to the post they have been nominated for.

Now if there is a election for DGS(P) and outdoor secretary then the views of the canidates on the flexibility deal will be extremley relevant!

Any way i would like to see a national political officer post that has to be elected every four years.
Because if he voted for the deal it raises questions of trust and probity and at best questions of judgement.
Course if you don't think the role of equality officer is particularly relevant then the candidates fitness may not bother you.

So your saying anybody who was in favour of the flexibilty aggrement is not suitable for the upper echelons of the CWU, no matter which job they might be seeking?

Still im only 33 so no doubt in the next 27 to 33 years i will see plenty of National officers come and go for a variety of reasons.

No thats not what I was trying to say at all.
The point surely is that anyone seeking election should be prepared to stand by their record and be willing to argue their case.Presumably the guy did'nt vote for something that he believed to be a wicked betrayal of the membership, so he must have some valid reasoning to back up whatever decision he made. The key point is that those voting must surely have the right to make an informed choice

As far as i can tell nothing on this thread has been posted that shows SF was in favour of the felxbility deal, also there is no mention of this in the election address that was sent out.

Ha thats not the first time i've been accused of that. No thanks couldn't live in London..... living alongside those southern softies ha

I don't think its a poisoned chalice and actually from various reports i hear from around the UK Dave Ward is going down very well on the AGM circuit.

I would really recommend that you get your branch to invite DW to a members meeting and make your judgement after hearing him

I have to say i do think far too much focus is given by this union to equality. The primary role of the union should always be industrial. I do think we need an equality officer - to make sure we operate within law - Age discriminationa act, DDA, sex discrimination, gender discrimination etc. I don't think we need half of the equality hangers on though!!!
playing too much politics and becoming a paper tiger . :Applause :Applause Don't think it'll give our gruesome twosome too many sleepless nights .

RM didn't try to run the Union out of Burslem for nothing , times running out for these Senior & Area Managers , Big Al might want to outsource HR , from experience there will be people with an eye on managerial buyouts .

History is full of good talkers, Hitler, Blair . Thatcher, ect ect! I judge people on actions not a few well chosen words that they have been either trained for or have the gift of the gab! So you will excuse me not wishing for that pleasure on either myself or Branch. Ward and Hayes have been an unmitigated disaster for the CWU and all postal workers in the UK, you know how i feel about them and how they let us down in last years dispute so we dont need to go into that and i am sure you will learn how MOST if not all members feel when the realise they either have to work an extra five years or lose tens of thousands of pounds on their pensions because of Ward and Hayes ineptitude or worse? but thats another story. I still would like to know how any and all members that put themselves up for election stand in relation to the 2007 farce so that i and other members can make an informed choice, but according to the voice these will not be published! I wonder why? Could it be they are ashamed?

It has nothing to do anybody being ashamed and more to do with national rules around election campaigning!!!

I wasn't asking you to invite Dave Ward so he could impress you with 'a few well chosen words' - I was suggesting that you listen to what he has t say on the whole and also make a judgement on how he comes across.

Surely you can't lose. If he changes your mind then all well and good and if he doesn't then you will have the chance to put your opinions in person. Surely that is better than just posting messages on here.

The pensions debate still rages on and remember that it is Dave Ward who is leading the policy of rejecting Royal Mails plans on pensions! We can all use hindsight but it is far more difficult to stand tall when it really matters............ At the time

i know steve fishwick and he is a very honest, straightforward bloke. he has no airs and graces and as far as i know he is no more political than the average postal worker.
he would make a very good national officer.

He should have been standing tall on the pay and modernisation debate - I saw the podcast he put out and he should be ashamed - it was pure drivel advocating acceptance of the deal.

Banging the drum on Pensions! - my a*se - the consultation and debate is over with my friend - no amount of spin and rhetoric is going to change that - you know what they say about fooling people - well his fooling days should be over and if there is an alternative I'll be voting for whoever it is.

Beware a cockney bearing gifts!

As a member of the CWU i would presume that i could have, if i wished, ran for election to the NEC.

Suerly this would be enshrined within the rules of the union?

What if my Branch is suspended? What if it is being administered from CWU HQ and no Branch AGM has taken place?

What if there is no Branch Chair and Secretary to sign off my nomination form and no endorsment at AGM since none has taken place?

Are my rights as a CWU member therefore being infringed?

If this is so, can those individuals who are infringing my rights as a member and also seemingly disregarding the rules of the union be held accountable for their actions?

Can some wise individual with a clear unblinkered understanding of the union's rules in respect of National Elections and Procedures enlighten me on this most serious of matters?

Deeply Concerned

I would you suggest you contact Tony Kearns and ask for the process for members in a suspended branch to stand for a national officers post and stand for the PEC.

Seems yet again we are at an impasse. whether or not you are Ward his Royal self or some PA being had over a desk instead of working makes no never mind to me. The currant CWU leadership are crap and as members surley we have a right to know how the people that stand for election feel about our demise in terms and conditions! I have lived under Wards leadership for three years and have been lied to time and again by him and Hayes. I have NO interest in asking or debating with him or his "New Liebour" friends. I want to look to the future, a future that has a leadership that looks after its members rather than a bankrupt or corrupt employer and Goverment. As for the bit about "just posting on here" why are you here if thats how you feel! The pension debate still rages on does it so tell me why are we not having a ballot for IA but a work place ballot to see how we feel about it? Do that lot up there think we are stupid? Of course they do its more time wasting its going to happen you know it and so do i! yet again we have been sold out! How did Ward put it? we have won a victory in decoupling pension from pay! Some victory NOT, That lot up their have cost ME a 2 hour later start, a full time job, tens of thousands of posties jobs, a pay cut every year since i have worked for RM, an extra five years of hard graft to get the same pension that my sister or brother will get today. How can you sit and write as if those fools are anything else but either stupid or sellouts is beyond me with them making us all look like prats when we explain thats why we went on strike for last year and lost 8 days pay so our employer could close 2500 subs cut our wages and pensions and make us work harder for the honour and your still happy? because if you are i want some of what your taking (As long as its cheap because under that lot at HQ i cant afford much!) Anyhow as TBT said cant we agree to differ? I care you dont! good luck in your life PLEASE dont bother me again! Lots of love XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Carry on mate, you keep living in the world wherestanding still was a real option. I prefer to be a realist. Keep typing away with you're views on here. Would be so much better if you were prepared to come out and invite a national official to speak to you but if you don't want to then thats up to you.

Don't put words down that i've never said either. I'm not happy with the current state of our jobs but iknow that f wasn't for this union then Leighton/Crozier would have already privatised us and you would be doning you're delivery for a private courier firm.

Nevermind see you soon.
