Re: RMCtv : Message from Ricky McAulay: CWU talks update
Just because some people believe the management is incompetent does not make it entirely true.
Royal Mail has been a hard company to manage for many decades - it has not started with Simon Thompson or even privatisation. Why do you think it was sold off in the first place - for the private sector to modernise and improve things.
Electric cars and vans was all the buzz a few years back and for a large delivery company, it was a no-brainer; encouraged by government, environmentalists and even some of our workers
Parcels Hubs and the parcel sorting machine are a necessity if they wanted to capture more of the market and be more nimble; including having dedicated parcel routes and drivers.
Cost of Energy is way off the chart and we have a credit crunch and huge inflation.
Efficiency savings are not being made but we are being paid at a premium compared to the rest of the industry
A big company will have to make financial and operational decisions or remain stagnant and wither. Some of those decisions might work or not work or something in-between; that is why they are management and we are workers and the Union is what it is.
I don't buy the conspiracy of running the company to the ground or all these talk of administration but the financial squeeze will mean that the days of the job being cushy is over.
More strikes will come at a cost - something Martin Walsh mentioned but dozy Dave did not!

It can't be ignored what MW suggested, I can't see he's ever retracted his comments so we can only assume he felt they were entirely correct when he posted them.k979aaa wrote: ↑26 Mar 2023, 18:29Well some people like Cj are living a different or defiant reality one can only surmise his bonus is cooked if you do not bend over backwards and take it

Personally I'd sooner be employed in cr@p job earning a reasonable wage than unemployed on benefits if RM goes under.

Re: RMCtv : Message from Ricky McAulay: CWU talks update
Parcel traffic has not dropped off though. We are delivering more parcels than ever and in the last few weeks our York's have been rammed full of parcels. Mainly it's because people are lazy and can't be bothered to go and shop down the high street and because most things tend to be cheaper online. Gee, people are even buying cat food online now. People's shopping habits have changed ever since the pandemic. And I don't understand why we are delivering these oversized parcels as well. Surely these should be sent to parcel force or do they want rid of it??rambo1 wrote: ↑25 Mar 2023, 09:19Ricky, if you read this. Here's my take on the situation. It's obvious to me the company has no money. The vans are shite, can't get uniform . What money you have got, you're spending on fancy parcel sorting super hubs......which you are coming to reason, is going to be wasted because parcel traffic is dropping off so much. We ain't in covid times any more.
Let's face it, we know, the coms know and (hopefully) you know that the revisions you are proposing/ pushing through/ already implemented, do not and probably never would, work. Even with the fairy light traffic we have at the moment. They do not work. I assume you are doing this to strengthen your case for relaxing the ball and chain, sorry, the USO?
You are going to present the case to the government, that under our current business model, we can no longer fulfill the USO and will therefore be filling for administration. The government will not want to have to take up the running of royal mail but also will not want to be seen to be abandoning the 500yr old 'public service ' with elections coming soon.
The public doesn't by and large, give two hoots if they get mail 6 days or 5 or even 3 days a week.
So in summary, you want to scrap the USO, totally remodel our broken business model, to move to 7days for parcels as long as its premium service like SD or tracked, and deliver the rest 3 days a week, Mon, Wednesday and Friday? For example. You have been testing this model for a few yrs now, starting with COVID and I'm sure that the figures came back positive as I myself know, delivering 2 days mail takes about an hr more, not 8 hrs so you must have had a big gain there.
You have tested how many of us would like to leave the business via VR, so you can show the CWU the numbers to get them on board.
Personally if this new no USO business model would be profitable I would fully back the Union helping to ease the required numbers of workers out of the business, I'm sure you'd get your 30-40,000 out for a decent one off VR package and be able to reward the ones that remain as the business would be profitable again.
A shift pattern could be 4 day weeks 9hr weekdays then 8hr alternate sat/Sunday on pks. for FT or just have all contracts at 35hrs, the PT always say they want more contract hrs.
It would be nice if all parties could be honest and open with us all though.
But what do I know, I'm just a postie with 20+yrs experience and keen interest in business and investing.
But what do I know
However, I do agree with your comments regarding the USO. The business want all the revenue they get from letters but don't want to deliver it everyday. Just imagine if they got rid of Saturday as a mail day, they could potentially cut the workforce by nearly a fifth. I agree with you that a lot of the profits that the business made through COVID was due to letters not being delivered everyday, so if duties are routinely failing now due to these revisions are we still losing a million quid a day??
Interesting viewpoint on a SWW and innovative shift patterns, and if we have bigger outdoor spans, I would agree that this should be the way to go. Maybe they could offer weekends on overtime for those that want it? Like you said there are many who put in for VR. The question is would the union readily accept 30 to 40,000 less union members? They would have to put the union fees up so that they could pay Dave Wards salary!!
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

If the union lose 15000 full time members that’s £2.5 million in lost membership fees. You do get the sense that there is some self preservation going on here.

You either support the union, or accept McAuley and Co's grim vision of the future.

Just because parcel traffic in your DO is not dropping off doesn't mean it's not nationally, it stands to reason if bills and mortgage payments are all increasing customers will cut back on ordering clothes etc online. It's noticeable in our DO how the less wealthy walks parcels numbers have dropped offpostslippete wrote: ↑26 Mar 2023, 21:17Parcel traffic has not dropped off though. As far as getting rid of 30-40K people via VR where's the money going to come from to pay them of over £100M if RM truely are skint??

My round is in a wealthy part of town and parcel volume has dropped off a cliff. I had loops last week with 1-2 parcels in them.TopperGas wrote: ↑26 Mar 2023, 22:02Just because parcel traffic in your DO is not dropping off doesn't mean it's not nationally, it stands to reason if bills and mortgage payments are all increasing customers will cut back on ordering clothes etc online.
