Labour MPs vote for Agency Rights



On Friday, 22nd February 2008 after 4 hours of debate at the House of Commons and an attempt by the Tories to talk out Andrew Millers's PMB - 147 voted in favour (11 against) - a margin of 136 MP's - to back proposals to give agency workers equal treatment and to progress the Bill to the crucial Committee stage.



Among the 136 MPs who voted for the Bill's second reading were former Work & Pensions Secretary Peter Hain and former Labour Chairman, Ian McCartney. Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott voted for the 'closure motion', without rebelling directly against the government. This is indicative of the size of the depth of support throughout the Labour Party for the measure that its Cabinet members showed up in the Commons to signal their concern that the Government is dragging its feet on the issue.



In attendance from the CWU who watched from the gallery was Jeannie Drake, DGST; Andy Kerr, Vice President; Sally Bridge, Assistant Secretary; Carol Alcock and Graham Colk, NEC members which gave a well needed boost to those MPs who had any doubt that this is the right and just thing to do.



Billy Hayes, General Secretary said: "This is a real minimum wage moment. The working lives and welfare of 1.4 million agency workers and their families are one step closer to the fair and equal treatment they deserve and need.



"It is unacceptable in our successful economy to discriminate against workers in the same employment on grounds of whether they are permanent or temporary or agency employees. This division of the workforce provides unwelcome opportunities for discrimination and leaves these vulnerable employees unable to access financial services which their permanent colleagues enjoy. Andrew Miller's Bill provides a legal recognition of this and will guarantee fairness and justice for all workers in all sectors.



"When we get this Bill through, we won't find any MPs who'll admit to having been opposed to it. It is a quintessential piece of Labour legislation which we look forward to implementing and enforcing for the good health of British employment".



Branches may read in the news today that the General Secretaries are meeting with the Prime Minister to open discussions on the way forward and in particular the government proposal to set up a Commission with trade unions and the CBI.



The CWU welcomes the opportunity to discuss this matter with the Prime Minister and further updates will be provided as developments occur.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all those that worked so hard in securing those MP's on Friday, it was a lot of work but was a real milestone and whilst there is still a great deal of work to be done in progressing through the tricky bureaucratic Committee stage, Friday, 22 February was a victory to which the CWU played an important part.

These MPs aren't all Labour.
I don't recognise most of the names.
Isn't John Bercow a Conservative MP?
And Vincent Cable and Richard Younger-Ross are LibDems.
And George Galloway is Respect.
Did any SNP or Plaid Cwrmru MPs support it?

And how come the majority of Labour MPs didn't support a policy which was in their las election manifesto,
when even at leat one Tory MP could support it?

Mark Hendrick isn't on it -Well I never !, this is it , it's more interesting to see who isn't on it . Auntie Joanie Humble for Blackpool North and Fleetwood is on it , so's Gordon Marsden for Blackpool .Lindsay Hoyle ( the he that Hellfail thought was a she ) for Chorley and of course Two Shags . Gone up in my estimation .

Makes me nostalgic for the late Audery Wise MP and her daughter who was parachuted in as we'll vote for Daisy the Cow if it had a red rosette on it as we're that stupid . . Some of them on that list can kiss their New Liebour careers goodbye .At one time they'd have had a visit or calls from Alaistair Campbell or Mandy .
