Postal worker named 'unsung hero' in Royal Mail awards

A postal worker from Fleetwood has been named one of the Royal Mail's north west unsung heroes.

Derek Neave, who works in the Fleetwood delivery office, will receive £100 and go forward to the regional finals, along with the eight other north west heroes.

Satisfied and grateful customers from cities, towns and villages sent in nominations for Royal Mail's First Class People Awards 2008, citing incidents of bravery, community spirit and helpfulness above and beyond the call of duty.

Christine Nolan, head of external relations for the north said: "This short list represents just a few of the thousands of first class people working for Royal Mail, whose role in the community makes a real difference to people's lives.

"Because our people make daily deliveries to millions of addresses in the UK, they are more visible on the streets than policemen, and are often first at the scene in incidents, such as fire or road accidents and instinctively get involved.

"They are the unsung heroes who customers and Royal Mail feel deserve some extra recognition and appreciation for their efforts."
