Parasitic Royal Mail executives cutting corners, probably pissed off past IT contractors, bonuses all round, parisite executives disappear onto other companies, rinse, repeat, new scandal…

And they really shat over posties during covid, what makes you think your data is worth spending money on!

It's safe to say RM didn't pay them, and didn't do good backups of their system either.

It was mentioned in a news story that the backups also got hit. I would have expected the backups of the software to have been stored on a separate media, one that isn't writeable

It's insanely amateurish.

You have 7 removable hard drives, each night you back up the data to a drive, and in the morning unplug it and put the next one in.

A weeks worth of backups, for 30 seconds staff time each day.

There are more advanced methods of backing data up, fancy incremental backups where the downtime could've been minutes, but it seems even the most basic of backups wasn't done.

Didn't all online tracking go down for several days in December?

Everything about this makes it look like RM is clueless with tech, which sends a terrible message to any company wanting to partner with us.

I can only assume the IT budget was cut to the bone before these incidents.

A company like RM should be keeping multiple copies of backups spread over different sites

Have the hackers got my personal information and payroll data?

Strange is all this! I requested a subject access request and every single personal email I have ever sent/received was missing, even after providing all the search terms. I chased this and have been ignored. Looks like my emails are not available.

All the standard paperwork was provided though, such as return to works and historical new starter forms.

Hmm have lockbit got all my emails. Do you think they’ll accept a fiver to release them cos I can’t afford anymore than that

I am not an IT professional, but my understanding is you'd have local backups for quickly reverting any screw-ups and offsite backups for longer term insurance against calamities (fires, floods, etc). Standard practice against your hard drive being encrypted is to undo it with a backup, Jurassic Park style. Someone in management better get their backside booted into orbit for this.

Problem was instead of just saying "clear off we've not paying you a single penny" they went down the route of pretending they had no money again and, seemed, to be looking for a cheap way out, given the timing you wonder if the Government got wind of their intentions and so made the announcement.

These hackers truly are contemptible. £80,000,000 for doing nothing? The respectable way of making that kind of money is pull up your breeches, roll up your sleeves, and become a company executive. For shame.
