A TOWN with a population of around 15,000 looks set to be left without a post office from the end of next month, it has emerged.
Budgens supermarket is moving out of Maldon at the end of March, meaning the town's post office will be forced to close unless an alternative location can be found.
The post office was only relocated to the shop in July 2006 amid claims it would ensure its long-term future.
Budgens' announcement has angered the local MP, John Whittingdale and the leader of Maldon District Council, Alan Cheshire.
The council has offered a number of suggestions to Post Office Ltd to find a temporary solution until a new location has been found.
Mr Whittingdale said: “It is wholly unacceptable that Maldon should be left without a main branch post office located in the High Street.
“If an alternative franchise holder cannot be found in time then the Post Office should reopen their original office.
“Anything less would be a betrayal of the undertakings given to me and to the people of Maldon less than two years ago.
“I am seeking an urgent meeting with the senior management of the Post Office and have also spoken to the regional director of Postwatch who fully shares my concern.â€

With the amount of Post Offices due to close this year. How long do we think it will be before rival operators club together to pick up the bits to offer retail outlets offering their own delivery services and Royal Mails? Ofcourse they will make Royal Mail pay through the nose for the service. And Royal Mail will have no option but to do so because they will have no network left of their own. Prehaps this site in Malden will be the first ?
