Own insurrance needed now for RM drivers?

Post by dunposting »

A rurul postman was told in our office, by letter, that any accident he had to a RM van has to reported to his OWN insurrance company. Where's this leading?

you don't need your own insurance but you must inform your own insurance company (if you have one) of any accidents you are involved in as a driver so they can put their premium up the next time you renew as you can lose your no claims bonus. as far as i'm aware this is a legal requirement as if you claim on your own insurance for something and they find you didn't inform them of a accident at work they can refuse to cover you

That's quite correct. Your insurance company (if you have one) need to know details of all your accidents, claims and offences, even if they occur whilst driving for work under work's insurance cover. Obviously, you need to inform work if you have an accident in your own car, or get done for speeding etc.

So with this initiative it's going to be all the more difficult for Royal Mail to fill some of the less popular rural dtiving duties.

First heard this over a year ago. It's now a legal requirement that you inform your insurance provider if you have an accident that was your fault. It's not RM's fault this time (my god, did I just say that), but then again, if the accident was caused by a faulty RM vehicle they still wouldn't be to blame as the relevant checks are supposed to be carried out daily, weekly etc, by the driver, so they might get a wrap on the knuckles, but your insurance and license would be at risk. Typical.

It's been a requirement for many years that you inform your insurance company of ALL accidents that you have, regardless of who's fault it is.

I'd love this to happen to me. I don't have a private car therefore no insurance......

This isn't as sinister as it sounds, although i have not had car insurance for a few years now,i've no car.

I think this is a leagl requirement on most policys.

This seems to be a case of RM doing summin RIGHT for a change  :nervous :silenced :shhhhh :angel

Okay. You have an accident whilst driving RM van. You tell your insurance company who then add more to your premium. Who pays for that? YES i do. Do i get paid any more than a walker or cyclist? NO?

Surely it will make all the drivers slow down and concentrate on the driving and the condition of the vehicle :confused

Had this in our office a while ago, when one of the lads had a bump, RM sent him a letter to remind him to tell his insurance company when it came to renewal

the big question would be if you have a number of incidents with RM or even one, would this effect your own quote meaning you pay more, would be interested to know if anyone has had this situation, as i don't get paid to drive, think the next repick i might move if there is any FT left by then!

If you have an accident you have to tell your insurance company straight away, not at your next renewal. This applies even if you are driving a company van, car, your mates car, whatever. If it's your fault your insurance company class you as a greater risk and adjust your premium accordingly. If you have lots of accidents driving a Royal Mail van, your private car insurance, should you have any, will quite rightly go up.

This applies to everybody, company reps, taxi drivers Asda van drivers etc etc.

If you have an accident you are a greater risk, it's as simple as that.
