So you’re as uninformed as they are then.

Royal Mail don’t only do parcels and letters will be part of the business for years to come.

Why would we become redundant when there’s too much work for us to cope with ? You should also realise jobs become redundant, not people.

I could list a lot of reasons why this article and your contribution is nonsense but I really can’t be bothered.
Letters will be a part of the business for years to come but the decline will accelerate.

RM have a lot of work not because of volume but because of colossal inefficiency. RM still use frames in DO's FFS. Have a look at other countries postal services - Japan for starters - to see how it should be done. Nobody beats Japan Post.

If my postman had left my parcel in the bin, picture or no picture, that’s where it would stay, it goes back, end of 😡

The majority of letters are pre-sorted.

The inefficiency is not in the postal workers, after all, they can only walk so far and so fast. There are limits to both. Even though letters are in decline going to a house with 1 letter still takes the same time as going to the same house the next day with 5 letters.

The efficiency, in my opinion, is in how the mail is presented to Delivery offices until that's sorted RM can only squeeze out so much blood and sweat from posties.

I have zero issue with individual posties. I have a massive amount of issue with how RM is run. You've hit the nail on the head with the way post is presented. My sister, who works at a DO in Greater Manchester, where she earns more than when she was a Tesco Store Manager and works less hours and with much less stress, describes all the issues in great detail. You'll probably already know them.

I run (or ran since the strikes and cyber attack have, either temporarily or permanently, killed it), a business which spent £500k a year with Royal Mail. I was loyal for 20 years.

The difference between RM and Japan Post is stark. I visited a Japan Post office in Osaka when I was over there a few years ago. (I didn't see a single frame while inside the building. They said that their location hadn't used them since 1992). They handle more than twice as much mail per per employee (volume not weight) as RM with 99.97% on-time delivery success rate. Every postal worker is required to read fluent kanji and English. They were embarrassed at the 0.03% fail rate!

Wouldn't it be great if the UK had the same?

I know. I had 5 Special deliveries today for example. Had to card 4 of them. I know not all of them are the customer specifically requesting that level of service, but still, it’s obvious that they should be in to receive it.
Yep, how stupid are they? Fancy daring to order stuff and then not sitting in their front room for a few days waiting for the delivery to turn up?
It’s a special delivery, it’s “special” because it *has* to be delivered on that specific day, *before* a specific time; with signature.

Are you dense?

I guess from a business owner's angle it would be great if we also had no unions in the UK?

That's definitely true although, given the appalling management of RM in the last few years, the existence of the Union is understandable. It would be fantastic for business and RM employee, that the business was well run, where employees were treated with the respect, dignity and pay that every person should have in the workplace. A unionised workforce could be seen as a sign of a business that does none of those things. Amazon workers are now unionising because of poor treatment. In an ideal world the Union should not exist because there is no need for one. In RM and in other industries, it seems to me at least that we in the UK are a long way from that unfortunately.

it would but looking at this document https://blogs.uniglobalunion.org/japan/ ... 1%A6A4.pdf

They have 3 x the amount of staff 425,000 against 141,000
Twice the number of Post offices 24k against 11K
About 50% more collection boxes 180k against 115K
Traffic letters and parcels - 21,735 million in 2018 million against RM which was 12,000 million.

So they have just less than twice the traffic, but more staff to process it

(2018 reports) https://www.annualreports.com/HostedDat ... G_2018.pdf

Geographically we are about 65% the size of Japan and they have about twice the population.

The 425,000 number includes Post Office, bank and insurance divisions. The equivalent figure to Royal Mail is 232,000 in 2022 which means that each employee deals with more mail per head. Also, bear in mind that Japan has no street names!! Japan Post also offer other services such as payment for goods on delivery which isn't really needed in the UK.

Japan Post deliver mail 7 days a week (it says 6 in the document you mention but it's definitely 7). They also deliver mail on all public holidays which I cannot ever imagine happening in the UK except for Amazon Logistics.

The reason I hold them as the gold standard is that almost nothing goes missing. Although they have tracked mail options, I've never sent tracked mail to Japan as everything always gets there and I've sent over 200,000 items there.
