We recently had a meeting with DOM, where we all agreed 8 hrs each day, he agreeed. But when he tried putting in flexibility document to his managers it was refused.

So it looks as though long and shorts are what they are after.

Beware.....

I am trying to be positive about this, because obviously RM need us to be efficient and uphold the profits for ALL our jobs to continue, but, you have to read BETWEEN THE LINES to see what RM are really up to with the LONG & SHORTS!!!

Hope I'm wrong! But I predict they will have you all working LONG & LONGS....i.e. 9hr. days EVERY DAY!

The reason.....their predictions of falling mail volumes are Bollox! I have seen a steady increase in Packets owing to Internet purchases and Ebay transactions. The retailing associations have already said they expect High Street stores to lose more and more business to ON LINE RETAILERS.

How short sighted can management be? We are going to need more posties, AND better equipment to enable us to carry AND deliver all these Packets.

What we've tried to get through to them is, that they volumes are falling, we still go to the address' every day, but instead of 4 or 5 bits of mail, it is with 1 or 2 bits, so dropping volumes don't really effect deliveries.
Plus as has been said, pkts are really on the increase, and what with 739's etc, we'll need more people not less.

There will be major problems when it comes to rural duties who don't have the 3 1/2 hr limit because in my DO most rurals are over their time on most days unless it's a really light day.

For example: last week I did a rural which was 1hr over it's time each day and even the regular postie (who comes in 1/2hr to 3/4hr early everyday) cannot complete it on time.

I don't normally do overtime. So if on a short Tuesday (7hrs) its busy and I'm 30 minutes over I have to book it.
So if a 30 minute extension is applied does (as not overtime) does that 30 mins get knocked off later in the week from a long?

The 30 mins only gets knocked off the beginning of the day not the delivery.

That would come up under the Bankable hours part of any future agreement and is not currently in force, but basically you have it right. However, the Union will have to have safeguards in place to ensuer you either get the OT if you don't mind going over 40 hours in the week, or a system in place that means they cannot force you to go over.

Currently the 30 minutes should not be added onto the Outdoor part of the duty only the Inside Part, so if you go over on a short Tuesday you should book it as overtime.

However, check with Unit Rep and Area Rep to ensure that this has not been overridden by a local agreement as is happening in some places.
