If you take ANY mail home, endorsed or not, you're in trouble.
Have you guys got pouches that you can put the mail in and then put in a post box.
If you have no post offices or pouch boxes to leave mail in then you should sort it out with the managers.
If anything you can't deliver for what ever reason and it can fit in a post box, endorse it and put the f***ing things in there.
Down our way if it's a 739,we put 48hrs or even more if it goes back in the system.

Bag checks are not done so the IB or manager doing it can just have a 'quiet word' or 'rap you on the knuckles',they are done to catch you out and SACK you.

While i'm not sure whether it's against the law or not,it is a RM rule,so don't do it!!!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Especially these days whenever managers are under pressure to cut staff it makes it even more important to do the job properly.

Again you should be taking no mail home with you and if the office is closed (which is your managers problem not yours) then it is up to the manager to arrange a secure location to leave any 739'd or dead mail if the office is closed :d'oh!

It does seem to me that a lot of DO's out there have some very poor training and a lot of bad habits
'Very poor training'. Well my experience is an absolute lack of training after the induction day. The sheets I was given with dozens of things to be ticked once trained on have never been referred to or looked at since the induction day. The example I gave was soon after I started, I agreed one Saturday to do an extra half walk on overtime, was not told when the Delivery Office would close and be locked, and on returning decided not to leave the bike and 739'd post on the pavement outside the Delivery Office until Monday morning but locked the bike in my garage and kept the pouch of undelivered mail secure in my house. I doubt if anyone would have done much different in the circumstances.

We have regular instances, on saturdays especially, when certain posties do not complete their walks before the office closes :d'oh! So they end up taking any notice lefts home with them and bringing them back into work on the mon. Yet again if its ok in one office why should it be any different elsewhere!!!! But if some folk continue to use their own cars, well............ :no no

The office closing before the last postie has finished is not the posties fault or problem it is up to the manager to sort out either the office to remain open until the last postman has come back or to have a secure location to leave 739'd or dead mail but it should NEVER be taken home.

You really need to get the situation sorted otherwise you are just leaving yourself open to dismissal by managers wanting to score brownie points.

Maybe POSTMAN could change the banner to include DON'T TAKE ANY MAIL HOME.......EVER.

Of all the postmen that arrive at work early morning on their Royal Mail bikes, what proportion of them have taken undelivered mail home for the night and what proportion don't have any undelivered mail because they sign for Recordeds themselves and leave parcels on the doorstep ?

What part of doing the job properly do people not understand. If you have a RM bike then it goes back to the DO everyday, if you have a RM van then it goes back to the DO everyday, if you have any dead mail or any 739'd items then they go back to the DO unless you have a bag to pouch off and an agreement to do so. :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh

Random bag search, guy came in early to work,(although not to start work) manager stops him at door, asks to search bag, he replies, bags in car, you can search it when i officially start work.

Boss says no, i may as well search it now, so mate opens boot of car, 10 endorsed letters from saturday in it - this is monday btw.
Question, is manager within rights to search car?
He was stupid i know to let her do it,hes relatively new to the job, but hindsights a wonderful thing.
cheers
Another reason why brothers and sisters should not be using their private cars on delivery. When will they ever learn?

That's a good point. But as he's new to the job, he may have been frightened to rock the boat. Besides, a friend once told me that you can get on Buses for free, when on deliveries. If that's still true, then perhaps that's what he did. A little more information might be useful.

We can we get a bus pass which you flash at the driver as you board. Or you can claim back any tickets that you have had to pay for (out to walk and back to office only though) I believe this is a right/entitlement as the employer should be expected to pay any costs incurred if you have to travel for work reasons (which is why you can't claim to work and to home).

Thay fully understand all parts of the job, and also realise how much time they will save on a daily basis by taking a short cut home. Ten minutes a day saved equals 40 hours per year, so if they save half an hour by not returning to the Delivery Office and doublimg back home each day, that equates to three weeks pay a year for sitting at home while their colleagues are still working. If they can get away with it they will.

I think the simplest thing to do with undelivered letters, and I was told to do this by my dom when I started seven and a half years ago, is if on a Saturday after the office has closed you have undelivered post is to put it back into a post box, either endorsed or not. As he said at the time even he did not know when the IB were in the area, and never to take any mail home. Any P739 items should be returned to a post office, even if there wasn't one nearby. That was the only downside to doing OT on a Sat, having to drive 25-30 minutes to find an open post office which would be impossible these days.
As has been said he shouldn't have allowed himself to get in this, either by error or not. He obviously wasn't nicking it, but he could still could be done for wilful delay even if he had attempted delivery. I frequently have to return mis-sorts and kill offs back to the DO, which I do on that day and I factor in my return time.
I don't think that any off these posts are likely to help our colleague, but I hope we all take note and no-one else is collared for taking a short-cut like this.
I have a question though, was this person the only one to have his bag searched and why was he selected? I'm not inferring any guilt, it just seems odd that a manager would suddenly have the urge to do a random bag search.

But doing overtime on a Saturday, all Post Offices are closed in the afternoon and packets are too big for any post box, so sometimes there may be no alternative but to take undelivered post home in the pouch until Monday morning.
