Im an ex PHG and i still get my payment and no i hav'nt heard anything but i'll tell you what its gonna have to be a really good pay off because i will be telling them very clearly to take a long walk of a short pier i've still got 20+years to do yet if we last that long.

What do PHG actually do ? Just interested to know.

Yes, please can someone tell us why, or how, a PHG is different from an OPG? What was the grade supposed to do? etc. etc.

There is no such thing as such as a PHG Postman/person Higher Grade now.
From my experiance what they do down my way,is they are based in the RLE/Cage they do the callers office,sort the reg and gas bits out,paperwork here and there,computer stuff,739's,any more for any more......

Most of the Bookroom staff are ex-PHGs.
They used to do the more specialised jobs for which extra training was needed such as codesorting and VCS keyboard inputting.
My MC was the only office in the country which had more PHGs (1,600) than Postmen/women (900) as it only did sorting. We didn't have a Delivery Office then, but have since merged with the ECDO which does Deliveries and collections in the City of London.
The Postmen/women did the Outward Primary Sorting to Counties and Large Towns, and the more manual jobs like taking bags in and out to the platforms on barrows, and loading/unloading vans and lorries.
The PHGs did the Secondary sorting on the Divisions to small towns, villages and cities within the counties, and made up the despatches. They also did the more specialised jobs like Coding/VCS, RLE, Bookroom, Datapost, Revenue Protection, Surcharge, Express Duty, Uniform Duty, Blind and Missort Duty, and a number of other duties some of which have since been scrapped.

PHG jobs made you use your brain... Now the less we use our brains the screws aint scared... And it keeps them in a job...

RM has 'dumbed down' the job since the Way Forward with SiSo {Single/simplified sorting) etc.
Their view is that the job is so simple that they can bring anyone in off the street and they will be able to
do it with little or no training.
That's why they are looking to cut wages in real terms and casualise the industry.

There used to be a pride in the job. Top PHGs would know the circulation to just about every tiny hamlet and village
in the UK.
They even used to go out on bikes and in cars at weekends to compile lists of places with maybe only 3 or 4
addresses for their divisions. And there was a pride in being able to sort quickly and accurately without missorts, and in getting even the most badly addressed item to its destination.

OH you can have ya £20 quid a week chaps... But then as it goes on... Make everyone so pissed off and bored and upset with the job The Senior/PHG's and Posties leave coz they cant stand the shite we put up with... Stress and H&B rife....

That is an anomaly and a disgrace. Most of the duties defined as 'specialist' by the Way Forward do get an extra payment. and the Callers Office should certainly get one too.

If you find out what/if I am entitled to anything please let me know, as when I try to find out all I'm told is 'you don't get anything extra for that duty'

Unfortunately k66yla, because of the introduction of unigrade in the Way Forward, former Postmen/women who
sign for a duty that used to be a PHG duty do not get the PHG allowance.
I certainly think that the Callers Office duty should get an extra allowance because of the difficulty and stress
it involves, but it's unlikely that RM will agree to make any extra payment in their cost cutting frenzy.
