Jumping ship

Post by baldrick »

Approaching 60 (rather too rapidly  ) it's too late for me to make a new start.
Also as Rhino says we should not let AL&AC destroy a job whose wages and conditions were fought for by our predecessors.
However there are a lot of my younger colleagues who no longer see a future in RM, and have taken VR, or
are considering taking it next time it's offered, as they still have time to make a career elsewhere.

i hear this comment all the time, the idea is to raise everyones pay and conditions, not resort to comparing yourself to the poorest paid member of society. the rich elite at the top have never had it so good, the inequality between the rich and the poor has never been greater since the Victorian times, compare your wages to them. there are so many examples out there now, which proves the Capitalist System has entered a new phase, the Capitalist Elite are gouging themselves on ever increasing Bonuses and Pay and share options, to me it is obscene. here is one example-----'NatWest Three' head for prison

The three admitted guilty to wire fraud
Three British bankers have been sentenced to 37 months in prison each for their role in a multi-million pound fraud linked to US energy firm Enron.
David Bermingham, Gary Mulgrew and Giles Darby - the so-called NatWest Three - have been sentenced after admitting to wire fraud.

A Texas judge announced the sentence, thereby approving a plea-bargain deal.

Last November, the three, all 45, admitted to defrauding former employer NatWest out of $19m (£10m).

Judge Ewing Werlein in the Southern District of Texas announced the sentence on Friday.

Conspiracy

The men admitted to conspiring with ex-Enron employees Andrew Fastow and Michael Kopper, who are already in prison, to defraud NatWest of $19m and then split $7.3m between themselves.

The judge also ordered the three men to repay $7.3m to Natwest's owner, the Royal Bank of Scotland, as part of the sentencing.

Charges brought by prosecutors argued that the three men had advised NatWest to sell part of an Enron-owned firm, Sub Swap, for less than it was worth.

With today's announcement, three more individuals have accepted responsibility for their role in the widespread fraud at Enron

Alice Fisher, assistant attorney general, US Department of Justice

The men then left the bank and bought a share in the company, before selling it on at a higher price for a profit.

Bermingham, of Goring, south Oxfordshire, Glasgow-born Mulgrew who lives in Brighton, East Sussex and Darby, of Lower Wraxall in Wiltshire, were extradited to the US in July 2006 and had previously protested their innocence to seven charges.

But in return for pleading guilty last year to one count of wire fraud, US prosecutors agreed to ask for the six other counts to be dismissed, and supported the trio's bid to serve some of their sentence in the UK.

Following the sentencing Bermingham said: "My conduct in this matter fell well below the standards expected."

Darby said: "I failed to take the right course of action and I deeply regret that."

Mulgrew apologised "unreservedly" and said his actions "lacked integrity".

The three are hoping to serve their sentences in the UK. But they still have to be referred to a US prison initially.

Enron, once a hugely successful energy firm, collapsed in 2001 with debts of $31.8bn (£18.3bn), becoming the second largest bankruptcy in the US.

This triggered a wave of court cases against the firm, including from former employees who lost their jobs and saw their pensions collapse.

Assistant Attorney General Alice Fisher of the US Department of Justice said: "With today's announcement, three more individuals have accepted responsibility for their role in the widespread fraud at Enron".

Deutsche Post boss set to resign

Mr Zumwinkel is suspected of tax evasion
Deutsche Post boss Klaus Zumwinkel, who is under investigation for tax evasion, has offered to quit.
Deutsche Post's executive committee has called on the board to accept his resignation, which German Chancellor Angela Merkel described as unavoidable.

The German government is a major shareholder in Deutsche Post, which also owns the global delivery firm DHL.

Germany is cracking down on wealthy businessmen using offshore bank accounts to escape taxes.

Hundreds more Germans face being investigated for tax evasion.

"In a large number of cases, key personalities from our country sought to avoid their duty of solidarity via taxation by practising fiscal evasion to Liechtenstein," a finance ministry spokesman said.

Deutsche Post said on its web site that it was in the interest of the company for Mr Zumwinkel to resign.

'Morale damaged'

Peer Steinbrueck, the German Finance Minister, said the scandal had damaged public morale.

Deutsche Post has a market share of nearly 90%

"If the public has something like this as a role model then they'll start having doubts about this economic and social system. I didn't think this was possible."

On Thursday, the Deutsche Post boss was questioned by police and his home and office were raided.

Prosecutors suspect that he avoided paying 1m euros (£750,000; $1.4m) in taxes using banks in Lichtenstein.

He has not yet made a public statement about the allegations.

John Allan, the British finance director at Deutsche Post, has been tipped by some analysts as a likely successor.

Reputation soured

Mr Zumwinkel, 63, is one of Germany's most influential business figures, credited with transforming the postal service into a logistics giant, as well as developing its retail banking arm, Postbank.

He has been chief executive of Deutsche Post for 18 years.

He is one of the longest-serving chief executives of a German blue chip company and also heads the supervisory board of Deutsche Telekom.

But he is no stranger to controversy.

He sold about 5m euros worth of shares after the introduction of the minimum wage for postal workers - which he fought for - boosted the company's share price.

I read it and dound it interesting and TBH i would rather have long rambling posts pointing out the inequalities inherent in a Market Driven system rather than all the insults we kept getting from CantypeandSHouts and his ilk.

So from be thanks borders :Applause :Applause :Applause
