Postal workers walk out in Leicestershire -

Postal workers in Oakham, Leicestershire, walked out in defence of a sacked colleague on Wednesday of last week and are now set to ballot for official strike action.

The 57 workers were angry that a postal worker had been summarily dismissed after leaving the keys to his van in the vehicle while collecting mail.

The van was then stolen. Many union activists believe that increasing workloads and pressure can lead to mistakes.

A union member at the Oakham delivery office told Socialist Worker that the entire office had walked out in defence of their friend and colleague.

The pressure we're being put under at the moment will only lead to more mistakes and shortcuts being made but :lfo :cfo don't understand that because they aren't under the same pressure

I wish I was a Bhuddist, I'd love to believe in reincarnation and believe that these two w*****s :lfo :cfo would come back as a couple of maggots.

Hold on,leaving keys in a van and the van gets nicked IS a sackable offence!!
How many times do these f***ing drivers have to be told!!!!!

even in the good old days , you'd get two years serious warning or probation for that .

I remember my induction film and it showed postie's manager saying "He phoned me up saying you better have my cards ready when I get back as I left the keys in the van and it got pinched . The driver said I got two years serious warning , he seemed OK about it -the point of discipline is to make sure someone doesn't do it again .I'd have give that film the benefit of the doubt and yes it was porridge for interfering with the Queen's mail .

Depends if RM are playing politics as per usual .

I have worked in a vaguely similar ex -nationalised Industry , they did tighten up and the staff paper seemed to be gloating about saving the pension money on dismissals .

If I was in the same boat , I'd have handed my notice in , the Social would have been OK about it and I'd have kept my pension . If it was a manager , he'd have been told to go quietly

Perhaps the staff who went on strike can find the one who stole the van, and strike out at them!

It is not that long ago that you would be sent down for a long, long time for interfering with "Her Majesty's mail".
It's sad that the guy has been sacked, but he is 50/50 to blame along with the thief. But what exactly will sacking him achieve? Is it some kind of deterrent to others who do the same or is it a way to save pension money and cut jobs?

If i had left the keys in a van whilst doing a collection it would be only to save time.If a duty require's you to do such things than do it properly.If than that duty fails due to insufficient time than so be it.
I don't want anyone to be sacked,and god luck to the boys and girls in their action.But whilst you're out there
decide amongst yourselves whether "rushing around" is actually helping you or the business.Remember that "job
and finish" has gone.
This new deal,(good or bad) does illustrate one thing and one thing only.
STOP KILLING THE JOB!!
