The manageress :evil/mad says she has the autonomy to run her offices as she sees fit. :confused
Christ! not another self appointed, self serving, conceited, empire building little Hitler. Is she actually a manager or a sub post office mistress with delusions of grandeurs? :evil/mad :evil/mad :evil/mad I have come across little sh***s like this before. My advice would to get whoever it is being treated different from everyone else to lodge a grievance based on the fact they are being discriminated against, and then remind Eva Braun or whatever she calls her self that discrimination is a sackable offence. :evil/mad

We have a number of SPDO's in my area and I for the life of me don't understand why people allow themselves to be treated like crap. We had one Post office mistress who went round ripping up peoples overtime dockets, telling them she thought they hadn't taken out enough to warrant payment! :evil/mad The posties concerned would not challenge her in case she sacked them! FFS! :mad :mad

What you say is partially correct. Everyone is entitled to the same amount of time off and leave reserves or part timers should not be at a disadvantage. So they are entitled to a long weekend the same as everyone else. It doesn't really matter if they have a long week end on week 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, just as long as they get a weekend off the same as everyone else. What tends to happen a lot with leave reserves ect.. is that they don't see a proper weekend because a manager cant be arsed to plan properly, and weekend work is hard to cover, so a leave reserve is dumped on it and they often miss out on a weekend off.

I think you're wrong. In our office different days of the week are longer or shorter hours. For example Tuesday is 5.30 - 13.30 Monday 5.30 - 13.50 Saturday 5.00 - 12.30 So over the six weeks rolling day off you work 40 hours a week. but for example week 1 Tuesday off you work less than 40 hours that week whereas week 2 wednesday off you work more than 40 hours. If you don't get the days off you are entitled to you could be working more or less than 40 hours a week. So you have to have a long weekend every 6 weeks to make your working hours tally up to 40 hours a week. In laymans terms if they keep giving you an easy Tuesday off you are probably working over 40 hours a week so breaking allsorts of agreements. Hope this makes sense. Why shouldn't a day off cover or holiday relief get their long weekend they are entitled to the same as a permanent DO otherwise it must be discrimination.

Well I may be weeing in the wind here but I am almost sure I saw a European directive in line with the new regulations which have been enacted that you should be entitled to a period of rest of 48 hours every so often - now I am not sure if that included holidays, bank holidays or what have you. I'm sure someone will know more than me.

Can't see nothing in the link below, but there is a thing with RM that you have to have a certain amount of time between shifts.
But this goes out of the window when you've got bods doing (on paper) docket, working 12+hrs a day, which i'm sure is breaking some law or other.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

That's nothing to do with RM - it is an EU directive that there should be 11 hours between shifts, originally it was 9 then 10 and currently 11.

I ask because I have had about 3 long weekends in the 2 years I've worked at RM because I've never spent more than a couple of weeks on one delivery.
:mad
thanks
This was bought up when we went in to our revision 20 months ago, where as before it used to be ah well never mind thats how it goes we decided that our 9 reserves would rotate the long weekends amongst themselves,so instead of the senior reserve getting first pick everyweek they all get a chance :Very Happy not 100% sure if this is being done but i dont hear any of the lads moaning, mind you it might be something to do with we do a 4 day week so there getting 2 days off anyway,i will find out.

:Applause :Applause Thats exactly the way I do when sit down with the gaffer during our resource meetings. They even get rotated through the four nighters so that they get a long weekend every third week. :nana :nana BTW, I am full time and have my own duty, but like to ensure our part timers and leave reserves get a good deal.

I can remember when I was a floater about 14 and a half years ago and I never got a long weekend. Sometimes I got a Saturday off, but because I covered mostly the lads who were on nights (performed for 1 week on a six week rotating basis) on the Monday I usually copped for an entirely different walk. The hourage thing is a con as well. Due to the different hours worked in many offices, ie shorter Saturday attendance etc, you often worked more hours than you were paid for, as is the case now if you float. You only really benefit when you are on a walk of your own and get the full rotation of duty days off.

Just a little extra bit about being a reserve, in my DO we've been told that because you're a reserve then the DUM can do whatever he wants with you including moving you mid prep onto another duty and NOT giving you your day off :mad (compulsory overtime anybody).

European worktime legislation is what you need to read that gives you all the information that you need, the whole aim of this new derective is to bring us into line with europe and the hours that are worked in europe,it was noted that people in britain work longer hours than our european counterparts, and it has been frowned upon also i believe that the new driving hours was introduced at the same time and has just been up dated again that is to limit drivers hours to prevent accidents due to fertigue as there had been accidents due to companys making staff drive for to long, to many great distances being covered.

What's a resource meeting? because in my office the DUM doesn't do meetings or WTLL or group huddles or for that matter attendance but we do get lots of letters from him

saturdays off?

Post by traww »

Does the union intend to do anything about this?

OK I haven't been in the job lthat ong but it didn't take long to see that the senior posties cry seniority straight away when it is muted that everyone should get a Saturday off every now and again. I know that those who have been in the job a long time deserve some "privileges", and to be fair they do, they get first choise at any rounds that come up for grabs, they get more annual leave, they get priority when choosing winter holiday dates, etc, etc.

We all have families and should all be treated equally, be entitled to have a social life and the occasional weekends away. It is 2008 not 1955 and we all have the same civil and human rights and it should be changed.

I believe days off should be rotated an a week by week basis as follows (forgive me if this is already happening in some offices - reading some posts it might be)

week 1 - Tue off
week 2 - Wed off
week 3 - Thur off
week 4 - Fri off
week 5 - Sat off
week 6 - Mon off

Tagged on to Sat off the Mon off would give a very long weekend every 5 weeks. It would also mean that everyone gets an equal share of the light days (Sat, Mon & Tue) and busy days (the rest). This is only a personal view but I hope it will get the ball rolling.

Incidentally I have heard in some offices that shifts have been made 10 hours over 4 days with 3 posties covering 2 rounds on a 4 days on 4 days off basis. Is this going to be implemented everywhere and for everyone on every round? or is it another inequality or potential area of conflict.

That's it. :hmmmm

That's the way it's supposed to work in my DO but because I do reserve I don't get to stay on a duty long enough to get a Saturday and Monday, as I've said before my DUM has said that because I'm a reserve I'll get treated like crap (I'm paraphrasing).
