Most “good” legislation/tactics are done over the long term.
What we see in British industrial relations now is what happens when you have a long term/semi-generational conservative government.
First, permit questionable working practices like not paying pension contributions and sick pay. Sports Direct being a hugely successful beneficiary of this kind of approach.
Next, erode rights, and make people think that zero hours contracts are a good thing and in some way a benefit.
“Choice”. “Flexibility”
In the same way that not paying someone holiday pay is a good thing and in some way a benefit.
“Mortgage holiday” “Debt”
Gig economy employers hello to you.
Then we’ll have issues so let’s fix that by bypassing decades standing legislation and let’s start allowing outside contractors to provide labour to “assist peak periods” and “periods of industrial relation turmoil”
Hello Royal Mail.
Well not fully Royal Mail. These guys don’t know what a first class letter looks like but if it’s a tracked they’re your man.
Ideally smooth “employee” relations by not telling them they’re strike-breaking until they turn up at a picket line.
What that will do is result in thousands of low-paid, poorly treated people turning on each other due to desperation instead of the overpaid corporate thieves that initiated the process or the overpaid governmental thieves that oversee and permit it.
Can’t wait for the “tough new policies” on strikes, Rishi.
Must be nice being married to a billionaire and not having to worry about how to pay your next gas bill you utter cun.t.

Exactly . Royal Mail was privatised long before Brexit . The union warned us ten years ago this could happen under privatisation and now they are being proven correct .I'm convinced this would have still happened even if we were still in the EU .drfeelgood wrote: ↑14 Dec 2022, 00:13Absolutely nothing to do with Brexit!! You need to move on from all that divisive remoaner stuff! Most of the so called red wall seats, including my area, voted for Brexit and for very good reason!

Re: Legislation
Not one. Not one union legislation brought in by the Thatcher government was overturned by the Blair government. Simply because whoever governs the country at the time do not want strikes damaging their reputation. So if anyone thinks its going to be sunny days under another Labour government dream on. The unions aren't as powerful as 1970s but some people still think they are. As I say dream on. Get the best deal we can get for postman. That's why we pay our fees. But a glorious revolution ain't going to happen. Postman have bills and mortgages like the rest of the world. What has destroyed the economy was the stupid lockdowns. Supported by all major parties and the public so they're all to blame. Stay at home at Christmas to save granny. What a load of bollocks . Postmen kept working to save Christmas not destroy it and now paying the price for that nonsense.

I’m no brexiteer but wasn’t it the EU that made us open postal services up to competition?walthmstowman wrote: ↑14 Dec 2022, 01:04Exactly . Royal Mail was privatised long before Brexit . Re: Legislation
It will just lead to rioting.
We all just go off with stress for weeks/months, blame the company and the government.

Re: Legislation
Yes, well remembered . I can clearly remember Tony Blair saying it was an EU directive that there should be no mail monopolies in Europe and so he was going to open up our mail market to competition . That's exactly why and how DSA started . When I realised the EU was indirectly threatening my livelihood that's when I started to hate the EU. So basically I'm a Brexiteer all thanks to that red tory Tony Blair, antcpfc wrote: ↑14 Dec 2022, 08:15I’m no brexiteer but wasn’t it the EU that made us open postal services up to competition?walthmstowman wrote: ↑14 Dec 2022, 01:04Exactly . Re: Legislation
Brexit isn't the issue per se. It's voting in the Tories with a huge majority to "get brexit done" that was the problem. That's why we're facing a bit of a fight for the future direction of the country at the moment, the ERG wanted an extremely right-wing Brexit for the UK, lower taxes, reduced human rights, deregulation, reduced workers rights, and more authoritarianism. But they totally buggered the economy, and have faced significant pushback.drfeelgood wrote: ↑14 Dec 2022, 00:13Absolutely nothing to do with Brexit!! So they are now making "breaking the Unions" a campaign issue like it was in the 1980s, in an attempt to play to their base, and prevent total wipeout at the next election. They want the strikes, they want to turn public opinion against the Unions.
Royal Mail are taking advantage of the current situation, to push ahead with their agenda, while they can, knowing full well they've got a couple of years to get the damage done.

Re: Legislation
What “buggered the economy” was the totally unnecessary lockdowns and furlough scheme paying healthy people to stay at home, the billions wasted on nightingale hospitals, on PPE contracts for ‘mates’, and the NHS being turned into the National Covid Service. Save granny and the NHS my a**e!Murdoch wrote: ↑14 Dec 2022, 23:36Brexit isn't the issue per se. It's voting in the Tories with a huge majority to "get brexit done" that was the problem.
