Missing van checks now a disciplinary matter

Sorry if it’s common knowledge but they do sometimes check how long it has taken to do checks by the time you sign into app and out.
My manager pulled a few up and although it was fairly light hearted we know how the firm are acting at the moment.

I see about 1 in 50 people doing any van checks. People don't do them and managers know and don't care. They'd rather you skip van checks and get out on your delivery and doorstep everything so that they don't have to deal with anything you bring back.

Lets face it - managers love us taking short cuts!!


You take all the short cuts in the book and sometimes you come back to the depot having not completed and managers still claim you haven't done enough - that's how you know they want you to take the shortcuts.

Isn't that an easy one to answer/get out of....

You just say - 'I already know all the checks I have to do as I do them everyday! - so I do them one by one first and then I enter the vehicle check app and tick all the boxes if everything is good and mark anything that needs marking as faulty'.

Before this dispute started managers were banging on about van checks before you go out on delivery or else it would be a disciplinary matter the next day now there's complete silence from them because they're wanting us to go out of the door earlier

Some people barely drive and have no responsibility for the vehicle. They do 30mins less work each day as the passenger. Whereas the driver has to avoid crashing into things and make sure they keep people safe....

If you are driving for the day you should be paid more than the passenger sitting on their ass next to you.

It's completely wrong that you get the same pay.

Regardless of what your manager says, you are responsible for the road worthiness of the vehicle you are driving.
Do your van check every day.
If it is faulty PMT it and refuse to take it out.
If you take out a faulty van and get pulled by the police or cause a serious accident you are responsible in the eyes of the law.

Haven’t got a problem with this , what’s wrong with people, do the van checks , we’ve had plenty of warnings at my office yet it’s still happening.

Always do mine. Got a call 30 mins after I left office one day, you've not done your van check. Yes I have I said. They said watsapp a picture of it on PDA. No system is infallible as we all know with our tech.

When I started 40 years ago you got £6 a week even if you only drove one day in that week

Why not just do as you're supposed to do and check your vehicle?

That's great in theory, but has anyone actually been trained to do van checks? Worked with a fairly new starter, who doesn't own a vehicle and didn't have a clue, and they were told to just follow the info on the PDA. So green ticks for all, and 30 seconds later, off you go in a death trap...

Didn't they get trained during changeover? What about workplace coach or even a manager? Who told them to 'follow information on PDA'?

Did you raise it with management that the new starter needs retraining?

Spoke to agency guy about check he new nothing about it!

A van at our place has a cracked windscreen and it doesn't lock, it's been PMT'ed and people still take it out

We had a van where the seatbelt wouldn’t clip in so people were either holding it in place or ‘securing’ it with an elastic band. Absolute joke.

As for van checks, I count 8 different types of vans in our yard, that’s 8 types of vehicles where you have to figure out where everything is under the bonnet - one type of van to flip open the bonnet you actually have to move the steering wheel up a bit first to access the lever....now I’d consider myself experienced and do a van check every day but I can see why some new starter who’s had a crash course on the PDA and then a single day sat in the passenger seat with the workplace coach driving them round on a cosy rural night struggle a little the following day when he’s thrust into action, expected to complete with a ridiculous workload and is trying to figure out which of the mucky fluid containers is meant to be the brake fluid.

In my opinion, all new starters (and anyone who needs a refresher) should be showed by one of the mechanics how to do a proper van check - not by grumpy Dave ‘we are already late just tick every box’ and not by clipboard wielding Steve ‘just kick the tyres and get out there and make sure you clear your tracked.’
