cantypeANDSHOUTS you may have missed the point of why the Union and RMC don't like people using their cars. I personally don't mind people using them to get them to the round that's there choice and gives them a flyer. However the following points are worthy of note:

1, You need extra insurance to use your car for business use and Royal Mail insist on it but don't pay for it.
2. You wont get mileage allowance to cover wear and tear.

The 2 above reason all people are aware and its there choice. However you don't have a choice on the following.

You are not allowed to use the Car as a mobile Drop Point (Though a lot do) and you can be dismissed if you car is broken into and mail stolen. The DOMs are aware of this but turn a blind eye to it. They are therefore silently condoning an illegal practice.

Another reason I try to convince people not to use their cars is because Royal Mails biggest beef at the moment is paying people for 8 hours but they only work 7. I and other people are predicting that when flexibility hits, people who use the cars may have their rounds extended to cover the hour Royal Mail think they have lost. I don't think they have lost it after all you have worked hard to get finished early and provide a better service, but RM don't see it that way.

But the main reason why the Union don't like it is that when someone takes his 2nd bags out in his car, then the DOMs realise that the driver is not needed to take these bags out. He then adds on to the Drivers duty, or if there is enough posties using their cars then they may cut a duty altogether. Then the car breaks down or a cover postie who does not have a car is tasked for this duty and all of sudden there is no driver to take his bags, what does he do then, wait for ever for the bags to arrive ?. All walking duties should be planned for being completed without the use of cars, but when they see a chance of a saving by cutting the amount of drivers, or by extending a driver duty because posties use their cars, they will do.

All I ask people to do is think of the consequences their actions have on others. Posties using their own cars has cost jobs and this has been proven by DOs like Burslem and POSTMANS working to the rules and this caused new driving duties to be added. However, when it comes down to it I can't stop you using your car all I can do is present the counter argument, but if you consider that moaning, again there is nothing I can do.

I've got another reason not to use your car. In my area, RM have stated that NO ONE is allowed to use their cars on delivery. Not to get to the start or return at the end of the delivery. We've already had one person conducted coded for using their car.
My point is that if RM refuse permission to use cars in one area, there must be a reason and it will not be long before it is countrywide, but the car users will have already done the damage and when they are prevented from using their cars in the future, they will be expected to complete their deliveries within the times they have been doing them in. RM are cutting costs at every turn, how can you expect them to suddenly start spending money, putting more hours back into the DO's to enable you to even get to the start of your delivery? If you have proved to RM that you don't need their transport, they won't provide it. By the way, loyalty to RM is a bit like turkey's voting for Christmas.
Finally, you are paid a set number of hours, when flexibility comes in, you will work these hours, no less, if you want to do more work for the same pay, whoopie-do you.

You did not answer these points. But I am in agreement with your other points, and the fact that using your car is a personal choice, I am against it and I am presenting my arguments in support of that position.

By the way do stop calling other peoples arguments shite just because you disagree with it. Please try to present your own arguments and positions without belittling others valid and honestly held views.

If RM wanted to then I can see patrols being reintroduced. Gaffer then pulling you up whilst out on your duty and asking how much more mail you have to deliver. Not enough? Then they'll either monitor your delivery and maybe add some more onto it or expect you back in to do more sorting/ prep for the following day. Paid 8 hours? Then you'll WORK 8 hours. Personally though they'll be reluctant I'd have thought as it puts the 'starting 2 hours before their time' people off their stride and also the 'I'll give Royal Mail my time, car, fuel bills people off to make 13 minutes out of my duty'. They have some sums to do I think. Does it/ will it cost them more to get staff to work their 8 hours OR merely leave them to shoot themselves in the foot with regards to the starting before time and car brigade as it isn't costing them to get the staff out (van, driver, diesel, tax, insurance etc)

Won't need to with these PDAs they are talking about bringing in. Apparently they will have real time satellite positioning on a web site so that the customer can see where we are with their Specials- of course the Manager will check as well :nervous

DHL tests package tracking technology

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

http://lasttechnology.blogspot.com/2008 ... ology.html

Someday, packages could carry little radio frequency stickers that let you track them down anywhere in the world, even on a ship or plane halfway across the ocean.

"It's like a global positioning system for packages," said Jerry Hennessy, director of customer-service operations for DHL Express, the company that is testing the technology in the Phoenix area.

DHL, owned by a German company, is the world's largest express-shipping company and has its second-largest American presence in the Phoenix area.

That includes its main American technology and data center, housed in a bulletproof Scottsdale building, and its largest American customer service center, in Tempe.

The Scottsdale center, with 1,000 employees, is where the company brainstorms and develops new products for American customers, such as the radio-frequency identification technology stickers that operate like smart stamps.

"You can stick a tag on a box and transmit a signal back to the mother station that can locate specifically where the box is," Hennessy said.

The company is now running pilot tests with some customers to see how well the stickers work. The high-tech stickers also can be used to measure temperatures, to make sure food, pharmaceuticals and other products are kept properly cool.

Another technology the company has developed is a simplified import process. A company can go online and arrange for a van in another country to pick up products or parts and then create a label and arrange for payment.

DHL has about 1,700 employees in the Valley, the most American workers outside Wilmington, Ohio. DHL has about 10,000 employees at its U.S. air-freight hub there. Though it's the largest express-shipping company in the world, it is only the third-largest in the United States, behind FedEx and UPS. It has its own aircraft fleet.

Around the clock, DHL workers are hustling somewhere in the world. The main DHL headquarters are in Bonn, Germany, and it also has headquarters in Plantation, Fla., London and Singapore.

At the Tempe call center, employees help customers ship and track packages and get information about customs and other issues affecting international shipments. The Tempe site has about 650 employees.

The company not only handles packages but helps other companies import parts and ship finished products by land, air, sea and rail.

For three years it has helped ship live Christmas trees and ornaments to American soldiers in Iraq.

Among the most unusual things it ships are live animals, including crickets used for pet food; live lobsters for human food; and jaguars, tigers, birds and other animals for zoos.

"We've had people ship bowling balls, and sometimes they don't pack them the right way," Hennessy said. "So you see them kind of skidding and even rolling down the conveyor belts."

Ah, so that's why the idea for millions of people all having hand-held telephones that can be used by the phone companies to locate you anywhere in the country never took off, then ? :d'oh!

So what other money-saving schemes would you like to volunteer for, then ? Oh yes Guv, I'm well happy for you to cut my Full-time duty down to a Part-Time 35-hour week when flexibility comes in. Yes Guv, I agree 100% that because I've demonstrated an ability to finish well within my hours, I'm obviously being paid for too many hours, so I'd love to participate in your cost-saving scheme. And what's that ? You'll pass 1p/week into my wages via the Employee Share Of Savings (ESOS) scheme ? Oh, but wasn't that closed to give me a £175 bribe to vote for that crap pay deal ????

I bet if your local Tesco ran out of milk you'd volunteer to drive to their supplier and pick some up for 'em, on the basis that it would save you time and them money.

A fool and his money are easily parted.

from what cantype says he uses his car just to get to the start of the duty, whilst i have said about petrol etc before he is ok with that, as he says all his other bags go on the vans

well if you want to do that then go ahead as my argument was about posties using there car as a mobile drop bag [not supposed to do that, didn't know that]

what you are doing is saving time, for yourself, however if you think that as you say no one minds or cares what time you come back, we have gone though georoute about 3 months ago, they do know what times people are taking to do the rounds, all this means is the time you save by taking your car they will see this and add it to your round

As for the GPS thing well i don't know about you being able to or not being able to see where you are on the round at a given time, but what i have heard is that RM is saying "will be able to see where your packet is on delivery" this may or may not be the case, but what i do know the GPS i use can be downloaded on return and you can see where you are at any given time and any stops taken, avg speed etc

so would be nice to know if they can download the GPS data on return, anyone know? or just the data for specials etc?
