Hundreds of letters dumped in grave

The Royal Mail has started an inquiry after "hundreds" of undelivered letters were found dumped in a desecrated grave.

Vandals smashed open the grave and tipped over other headstones in an overgrown cemetery in Tong Street, Bradford.

Police and Royal Mail officials attended the scene after the cache of post was discovered by 14-year-old Anson Buttrey, dumped among bones at the bottom of the uncovered four-foot deep pit.

His mum, Anna Smith, said her son was "distressed" after making the grisly find while looking for his grandad's missing dog.

Mrs Smith, 38, of Tong Street, said: "He went looking around the graveyard and saw that somebody had smashed the grave to pieces.

"He thought the dog, Murphy, may have gone into the grave and he went to have a look himself and he said the damage was really bad, somebody had really done a job on those graves."


She added: "He told his grandad he had found a load of bones and he came across the mail. He was quite distressed."

Mrs Smith said some people in the area had been complaining that they had not received post for weeks.

"There were tax discs and bank statements with people's names on that live around here. It is all people's personal details.

"There must be a hundred letters and the Royal Mail has taken away three big sacks. There must have been over 300."

Anson went looking for Murphy, a Staffordshire bull terrier cross, when his grandad realised it had gone missing from the Holme Lane Tavern, Tong Street, the pub where he is the landlord.

The teenager, a pupil at Bradford Academy, had been looking for only a few minutes when he discovered the desecrated graves and dumped mail.

He said: "I looked in the grave and I saw bones - a ball and socket and then I saw loads and loads of letters."

A friend of the family reported the incident to the police and officers came to investigate.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said officers had contacted the Royal Mail when they saw the undelivered mail.

She said: "The Royal Mail has attended to collect the mail and the Council is to tend to the grave. The local Neighbourhood Policing Team has also been made aware and will pay the area attention."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "Royal Mail has been informed of a number of items of mail which have been discovered in the Tong area of Bradford. An investigation is under way."

Bob Hulme, area organiser for the Communication Workers' Union, said: "We have got a duty to the people who post these letters and a duty to the people who are waiting to receive these letters.

"We obviously do not condone people getting rid of mail in this way. In our area, this is a very rare occurrence where mail is not delivered properly.

"There will be an investigation and, if anyone is caught, my view is that they should be dismissed. There's no reason for anyone to do that and there's no justification."

Mr Hulme said Royal Mail employees were interviewed, vetted and background checks were carried out before they were employed.

"The odd one slips through the net, but most postman are dedicated, well-respected people who work hard to provide a service to the community, often walking long distances with a lot of weight on their backs," added Mr Hulme.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "We will investigate this incident and look at what can be done to repair the damaged grave.

"Our park rangers regularly patrol all of Bradford's cemeteries as do West Yorkshire Police officers and when an incident does occur we put on extra patrols in the area."

Mrs Smith said the graveyard looked like a dumping ground.

"It is quite sad. At the end of the day there are people in these graves and it is awful to see it has been left to deteriorate so badly."

However, in all serious and joking aside (but don't let it stop all the bad jokes) how low would you have to go to

1. Dump mail in a grave.
2. Vandalize a grave.

Looks like 1 or 2 people have very low morals. I just hope that the Postie who dumped the mail, if indeed it was dumped and not stolen and then dumped, gets the support from the Union and is not hung out to dry.

However, if indeed they did deliberately dump the mail in the grave I also hope they get everything they are due.

3 big sacks would be a lot more than 300 letters in fact if it was 3 big sacks then it would be at least 1/2 a duty so someone should have missed that amount.
