Brother Fluke is right stick to the matrix pouch weights. Have you lodged a personal injury claim via our Union solicitors overweight bags is a definite no no.

Why on earth are you carrying 20Kg+ everyday? Are you aware of the pouch weight matrix?

Indeed I am, my last bag shouldn't weigh anymore than 8kilos. Just recently, I weighed this pouch in front of my Line Manager and showed him the result, to which he replied "Is that just one pouch?", I replied "yes it is!" to which he shook his head, shrugged his shoulders and pissed off...

They have told me in the past to split this bag in half, deliver half and then return to the pouch box, collect and deliver the other half. The problem is, the length that my walk is , I have to walk nearly a mile back to the pouch box then another mile back out to start delivery again. This "dead walking" alone takes nearly 20-30 mins which puts me well over my finish time and they don't want to pay me overtime for this. This is also not really an option as I need to finish on time as I have other commitments outside of work, besides that I shouldn't have to work over my time if i don't want to!

The worst thing is, when my office changed over from 2 deliveries to 1 some years ago, I applied for 3 new boxes for this walk, and all 3 applications were approved but only 2 boxes ever materialised. I have re-applied for the box 2 times since then and both times the line manager involved has agreed that it was needed and forwarded the application. The box has never arrived, it was just recently when I quizzed them about it (again) that they told me that they had run out of money?! I have even agreed since with another postie to have a box moved from his walk onto mine because he doesn't use it but now they are dragging their heels and saying they haven't got the money even to move a box!!

Maybe I should write a letter to the Area Manager as nobody seems intersted in my office (including the union rep)?

Also are there any regulations on how long in distance a walk can be? Walking 10 miles+ a day on delivery is sureley wrong. If I'd wanted to march this distance every day i would've joined the army!

If I were in your shoes, I would tell the gaffer with a witness present that, I would be working to my time and bringing any undelivered mail back. The trouble with most managers is that they are unwilling to deal with a problem whilst a postie continues to work through it. The logistics of the walk is not your problem to deal with, they get paid to deal with problems, work to your time and cut off if necessary and let them earn the money their paid to resolve issues.

BTW. An infantry soldier speed marches 8 miles in 1hr 50 mins carrying 35lbs of kit + a rifle (9lb) as part of his annual infantry combat fitness test. I wonder how far a postie walks in 3 1/2 hours carrying on average 35.2lbs (16Kg) -17.6lb (8Kg)?

Thanks for the advice Fluke, I was thinking along the same lines myself. The only problem with that would be what to do with the cut-off? I don't drive and the nearest PO is 2+ miles away. I would consider leaving it in the pouch box and phoning it in but that would be risky. Trying to get a hold of anybody by phone at the office after 10am is near impossible. Your right tho about the managers, it does take something like this to happen for them to take notice and do something about it. Maybe I'll try claiming the overtime first then if they refuse it I'll do what you said.

The time it takes to return to the office should be included in your job spec! its usually know at travelling time and in my office its 30mins (15mins each way). I think your job needs to be looked at and would speak to your Rep about a walk test.
