WWI in general wasn't the 'mindless slaughter' that has been commonly portrayed (as the scholarship of the last thirty odd years has proven pretty conclusively (not least that senior officers were 'shirkers' - the casualty rates amongst brigade and divisional commanders were not as high as amongst more junior officers, but their deaths in combat were comparable to those of non-commissioned ranks in the British Army).

Nobody would deny the Somme was a slaughter, and the planning misconceived. However a fair amount of the misconception stemmed from the army believing that their artillery shells would be as effective 'as advertised'. In fact civilian profiteering and corruption resulted in an extraordinary proportion of shells being 'duds'. It's also true that the Germans had a much better defensive plan than the British anticipated, and that the use of insufficiently trained recruits was ill-advised (though in fairness, the artillery was meant to clear the way enough that the slow advance would not be much impeded by German MG fire). We should also be aware that political necessity enforced the offensive. Many generals thought it unwise.

The general staff and most senior commanders deserve their share of criticism but he idea of 'red tabs' sitting in a chateau sipping brandy and ordering men to deaths in their droves in some kind of drunken incompetence, and/or through mere callousness is a fallacy.
