Disappointment in talks on new mail sorting depot

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

So who is surprised then

CITY councillors were left disappointed with Royal Mail bosses after being told that Northampton was the preferred option for a new sorting depot.

The meeting at the Council House was held to discuss the future of the Bishop Street sorting depot, which Royal Mail plans to close in favour of a multi-million pound site in Northamptonshire.

Friday's meeting was attended by Neil Robinson and Des Arthur, of the Communications Workers Union, Cllr Hazel Noonan, Cllr Kevin Foster, cabinet member for city development, Cllr Dave Nellist and John McGuigan, director of city development.

Cllr Nellist said: "Royal Mail explained they were being pulled away from Coventry because of increasing competition from newer private companies and the pressure on them to cut costs.

"I suggested the old Peugeot site in Ryton as another possible option and they agreed to exchange information with us on the sort of site they needed."

Cllr Foster said: "It was quite clear Northampton was the preferred option.

"They said they were prepared to look at alternatives, and we will now go back and consider other sites in Coventry and Warwickshire to give back to them."

If Royal Mail have a preferable site in Northampton for a sorting depot, why have they reportedly(is that a word)purchased a large lump of the old Vauxhall site only 30 miles down the road for a so-called super mail center,if RM are to build a mail center in Luton it is rumoured that this will close down existing mail centers in Hemel,Watord,Stevenage & Milton Keynes.
