Two crimes against Ulverston postal workers - police investigating

POSTAL workers in Ulverston would be forgiven for going about their duties with extra vigilance following two serious incidents in November in which they have been targeted.


Cumbria Police announced this week that they are investigating two crimes - a case of arson and burglary at Ulverston Post Office depot, in County Square, on November 6, and on Monday, November 14, reports emerged that a Royal Mail van was targeted by robbers, again in County Square.

Cumbria Police have confirmed that the two incidents are not connected.


The incident at the Post Office depot occurred at 9pm November 6, when police officers and fire crews were called to an arson attack at the premises.

Emergency services extinguished the fire, and established that part of the building had been entered and damage had been caused inside.

The second incident involved a number of items being taken from a Royal Mail van in County Square.

A white Skoda saloon and a white Peugeot van were seen to be present at the rear of the sorting office, at about 2.55 pm on Monday.

An immediate police response was launched and a man, in his thirties, was arrested in connection with the incident at about 3.15pm.

The driver of the Royal Mail van was taken to hospital but his injuries were not reported to be serious.

Detective Sergeant Wayne Dixon said: "We would like to reassure residents we are taking this incident extremely seriously and a team of officers are currently working on this investigation.

"We have made an arrest but we are still seeking two individuals involved in this incident.

"We are aware this happened in a public place and a number of people may have information which could help us or have mobile phone footage.

"I would ask anyone who has seen or knows anything that could help us to get in touch on the contact numbers below."

Police are seeking two men wearing dark clothes. One wore a high-vis tabard over the top of dark clothing.
