Then there is myself on a 30 hour week after stinging RM for almost 5 grand on a buy down of hours.

Part timers do exactly the same as FT but have a smaller delivery and no IPS, none of this FT preping their rounds stuff. Some of the bigger rural duties have no IPS.

One thing i advise you all to remember is that RM cant change a duty from 40 hours a week to less hours a week without getting the all clear from the local CWU rep. If they dont get the all clear and go ahead regardless then the rep should be slamming in a dissagrement.

Its also time for CWU to start fleshing out reduced working week policy so we get some benefit from new machinery instead of RM getting ALL the benefits. WE must make sure that RM are not allowed to gouge themselves on savings from new machinery and share the spoils with the rank and file.

I would like a policy that 50% minium of wages saved through staff reduction from new machinery is invested in wages. In otherwords although there is less staff RM paybill does not go down!

When FT vacanies occur in my office then part timers if they wish can become FT and the vacancy advertised is then PT.
Sorry mate but thats crap, I am part time 25 hours but work more in overtime, and I generally cover peoples holidays so Ill be on a walk either 1 week or 2 weeks. These walks vary massively in my office 1 might be 2 1/2 hour the other will be 4 1/2 hour?, So your logic doesnt apply to me and at least another 10 people on my office. edit and whats this about not prepping walks I prep mine ussually spend over 2 hours prepping, redirections, packets, bundling up ect.

being a part timer myself (30hr)my f/t collegues expect me to do the lot.including ips.i have a habit of coming in 45minutes early too chuck in my frame to make sure the guy who delivers my bags to my one drop off point isnt waiting around for me.all our rounds take about the same amount of time yet they get 2 hrs extra pay for 30 minuts ips.i obviously cant get out before them yet im suppose to finish an hour before them.my opinion full timers have it made...now im very fast on deliver, usually first or second back.my supervisor/union rep seggests that as we part timers are back so early(real terms 15 whole minutes once our break is added)we should go pick up mail from another sorting office in the mornings.....

yes i do all the overtime i can lay my hands on. because of the ill health of the fulltimers theres plenty of it
full timers are always offered it first as there first in..

our office only has about 15 people and twelve walks
point is and i promise i have one,i dont fill i equal a half a postman as has been suggested :Boo hoo!

You obviously don't want an increase in your part-time hours if you come in 45 minutes early each day, if you stuck to your contracted start time and the driver has to return daily to collect your drop off bags when you are ready I'm sure your DOM would have to consider increasing your hours. Good luck to you if you are happy to work over 5 hours a week for nothing
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

dvbuk55 wrote:I must say that part timers are treated differently in our office. They never seem to be included in WTL because most of them aren't on site when they are held, they aren't asked to come in early to prep or sort and the overtime is a bit thin on the ground for them because they are by and large out later. That picture hardly paints a canvas full of enthusiasm for the job or the customer or the union or unity. TBH I'm surprised they stick it as long as they do.
Good points

I do a 4hr 30min walk at the moment. I am asked to come in at eight with my round thrown in (ha ha). My round is never fully thrown in so must finish it when I am in. I rarely get a van before 10.30am because they are all out collecting and I am lucky if I am on walk for 11am. It's worth noting that the full timers leave me and get on their allocated van for that area at around 8.30. (Not their fault but just a point). I then have to wait for a spare van.

Add that to the fact that its a 4.5 hour walk I am rarely done before 3pm+ then its a 30min ride back. This doesnt include any meal breaks taken yet.

My time is 8am-2pm (6hrs) which they say is enough to do the round. If thats so then Half a postman? More like one and a half. Basically, if they expect me to do this as they say it then I need to walk into the RM grounds and jump on a van with my bags ready as soon as I get in!

Part timers are treated like crap so please cut them a little slack.
To all new starters - RM don't give a flying f*ck about you, or what you might need to do, to live your life....YOU WILL NEVER BECOME F/T. It might be a great job, with great customers and colleagues, but if you can, get out and get something else.....the terms and benefits are no better than a lot of other jobs, and conditions are a lot better elsewhere - it's too late for me, I'm stuck here, but get out while you can!
Thats the truth

Hey I am AG and the reason I am AG is because my DOM (not line manager) refuse to give me a full time contract because of my disability or in his words sickness, I want to be full time
If this is the reason why you cannot get a full time duty due to your disability and your DOM has stated this, I would get him/her done for discrimination on the grounds of disability, go and see your union rep because this is illegal.

You'd think that was the case and in some instances it is - BUT there are full timers here doing 70 hours a week, or at least BOOKING it, whilst the majority of part timers are stuck with their part time hours or have to take the dregs to make a living wage. You'd think the CWU would have a little more concern because they have to provide the same services to a part timer for only half the subs. You've hit the nail on the head about the denigration of the service concomitant with the influx of part timers.
you do get people who are 'looked after by the writing room " and it can be a case of just booking the hours .Orders are "It will and it must be 60/40% ". Treat em mean and keep em keen and play them up against each other has always been the RM mantra , it's just got worse recently .

RM didn't spend time in Holland looking at TNT Post for nothing , that's very casualised , full of part -timers and has a weak union . The difference with Holland is many of the delivery points are multi-occupancy with communal letter boxes .

It always happens with these Industries, they want the continental model in GB , only on the cheap and it doesn't work very well in practice .

RM & the Government aren't in interested , look at that Hellmail site , article entitled "Who cares about the USO " -apparently we are all dinosaurs stuck in a 50's Public Service Ethos .

Big Al's and Gordon's attitude is be damm well grateful , you get any mail at all , never mind what time it comes . They don't do service , just personal enrichment and Brown is quite content to throw money at these sharks .

I must be half a postie then!

Well at least you admit it....

Not your fault... Shame on RM... I think the old devide the troops n rule them by infighting is working all the time for RM when ALL POSTIES N HALF POSTIES

Are popping each other out... The EEC laws on P/T workers being treated the same as F/T is a rule that RM love to use in THERE own favour.. Not to help P/T posties but to drive a wedge between all of us... I agree we should have writes in work and fair for all... But as we know .. When a P/T can knock off a F/T worker off of O/T due to the 9 hr away rule then this is bad for all in the job when its only the O/T that is the reason the wage is even half good enough to raise a family.... We all know this... The union HQ only want money in the kitty and dont care if its P/T or F/T... We lost the fight for F/T jobs after the way forward and the loss of the PHG... The rot set in and now we reap the misfoutunes of this... Its let RM employ ANYONE now... Even people who cant read English.... NOW WOT THE FECK IS THAT ALL ABOUT??????????

Its the bigger picture that i feel im looking at not just PT & FT...

Being made up to FT is a rare as Rocking horse shite.....

Good luck to the people who do.. :Applause

I just hope you aint the type to doss n cut the job up and cheat n lie n suck up to the screws to get the job?????

Oh and use your cars n come in early.....

Use lot can feck right off... as you kill the job...

out :cfo :lfo I blame these two...

Its not rare in my office, in my office its perfectly normal for FT to switch to PT and PT to FT.

Any way it will be at least 27 years if not 32 years before i retire so my buy down of hours from 40 to 30 dosent affect anyone else. What difference doers it make to the rest of my D.O if i get paid 30 hours a week or 40 hours?

Its not like a 40 hour person left and was replaced bya 30 hour person.

Part timers in my office are happy being part timers and have no desire to go FT. One of our FT who is approaching 60 wishes to go PT untill he retires.

If we were to convert all PT into FT it would mean a reduction in head count through bring their deliveries up to 3.5 hours.

Nothing wrong with having PT staff its the ratio of FT and PT in each office that matters and in my office its 8 PT and 59 FT.

Also any PT that wishs to go FT as and when a FT vacany occurs should be alowed to do so and in my office that is what happens.

Most importantly is that CWU powers that be who ever they may be over the next few years, dont surrender on working week hours reduction policy in favour of more reducing FT to PT.

Nothing to fear from me or the members in my office Tommo

I will be making sure my office gets a good deal out of pegasus and ensuring flexibility is implemented in line with the area guidelines that were negotiated by my area/sub area delivery reps which in my personal opinion are superior to the national aggrement.

Once job and finish is laid to rest, proably later this year all the whippets in my office and the start early people will be starting on time and compared to their current olympic athlete speed they currently work at will be having a nice relaxing sunday afternoon stroll on delivery.

Reading on here about what happens in offices around the country and comparing to my office, i think cwu members at my office are very lucky indeed.

If you were Royal Mail, would you keep 28 hours week work and go for 34 hours (apart from people who do full time) all the way to make it fairer and even out the walks ?

A pert time duty delivery SHOULD be 3.5 hours already! If it isn't, it soon will be. All PT hours in our office are taken up with final prep and delivery.
How has geo route taken into consideration less than a 3.5 hour delivery and how much less is it?

dvbuk 55

give me a mock duty structure for a 28 hour 5 day week that alows for 3.5 hours delivery?

2hrs 15 mins prep is what duties are based on for a urban 3.5 hourv delivery

3hrs 30 mins delivery

20 mins travel

Thats 6 hours and 5 mins x 5 days = 30 hours and 25 mins so would you get that down to 28 hours a week?

Peagasus/georoute has not yet reached my delivery office and we have not yet started any flexibility planning either.

I am fully expecting more than a few changes once pegasus and longs and shorts are implemented in my office.

How come your D.O has a exact date for ending job and finsh.

The national trials on "Utlising all paid work hours" havent even started yet let alone produced an aggrement!
