Where is the money?
GLS isn't going to be used to subsidise us any longer.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: All quiet on the union front
Apple and oranges mate, there is so much competition in the parcel buisness, and you cannot deny mail is down, i have been here 15 years and it is well down, but parcels are massively up, esp the last 2 years or so, best we can hope for is a later start and voluntary Sundays , with new starters on Sundays. We might get 10% over 2 years with all the terms included.guardianangel wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 12:43we must stay strong ,the money is there ,we just need to keep striking, the dockers took 6 months but got 14 to 18 % in the end.freespeech wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 12:03The only no strings deal to be seen will be the imposed 2%. GLS is not a financially separate entity no matter how Royal Mail spin it, it was purchased by Royal Mail from the profits made by Royal Mail, you can't buy shares in just GLS or just in Royal Mail only IDS which includes both.clashcityrocker wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 14:09Where is the money?

You watch the group still report a profit next week and still pay dividends and bonuses.

I just googled GLS, and when you change the country to uk, it says parcel force is GLS partner in uk, didn’t know this.

Re: All quiet on the union front
So am i reading this whole GLS cross subsidy situation correctly....
1999 RM buys "fledgling" GLS (as it is now known) (thanks Rico), and subsidises its modernisation & profitability over the next 14 years upto the privatisation rip off.
2013 - ? Cross subsidising ensures £ flows to GLS for continuous growth...none of those £ find there way back to "original" RM (letters & PF etc).
£Ms generated by UK business used to upgrade and reinvest in superhubs et al but nothing flowing back from GLS to fund modernisation & profitability in UK business, thereby ensuring the "ability" to show consistently dwindling economic viability.?
I'm just trying to wrap my head around the funneled cash from the UK ops to GLS but not the other way? (Presumably this was not part of RMG plan when state owned or even up to the date of total privatisation).
So really no surprise that GLS is the tasty piece of the pie then....its full of the gravy we provided since 1999!
I know, I know... I've over simplified and "made it fit" my narrative. But am I wrong?...perhaps...but maybe not by much.

Of course it is! That's why it's been given a value of £0 by ST. That way you won't miss it when it becomes IDS/GLS UK with its owner drivers and low pay part time workforce! (Alegedly)

It is not "us" that needs subsidy it is the government mandated USO. It is inherently financially unsustainable and will only become more so.clashcityrocker wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 14:09Where is the money?

If you were a government minister (especially a Tory) would you rather it was EU customers or UK taxpayers that sustain it?

Of course they will but that doesn't change RM making massive losses. I can't see a massive no strings deal on the back of GLS profits and RM losses.Rik wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 14:21GLS is not a financially separate entity no matter how Royal Mail spin it, it was purchased by Royal Mail from the profits made by Royal Mail, you can't buy shares in just GLS or just in Royal Mail only IDS which includes both.clashcityrocker wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 14:09Where is the money?

If I were a government minister (Tory or otherwise) I would listen to those telling me nobody really cares about a 6-day letter delivery service, and I would be changing the law to accommodate a relaxation of the USO.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 15:30

I can't see them interfering in the sell-off of GLS if that is the road the business wants to go down.

Re: All quiet on the union front
There are some that would say the interfering has already been done. The chairmans' mate and political cohort is the man that rubber stamps the approval? Yep, nothing fishy there, no hint of any interference...or questions either apparently.

Re: All quiet on the union front
it was set up to get other mail companies in the market liberalisation but it failed when the government took away cheep labour by applying minimum wages to under 25 year-old's and whistle post and tnt mail had to pay the mandated rate of pay. This whole business regulation is something that BREXIT could help in that we could change the DSA access arrangements and agree a price that will make a profit not a loss this is something we could all berate our own MP's for!Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 15:30It is not "us" that needs subsidy it is the government mandated USO. Having a 5 day service will result in 1 in 6 jobs gone 18% of the workforce we should be looking at growing the business not letting it wither on the vine!clashcityrocker wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 15:48If I were a government minister (Tory or otherwise) I would listen to those telling me nobody really cares about a 6-day letter delivery service, and I would be changing the law to accommodate a relaxation of the USO.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 15:30

The reason for the losses are expenditure on new electric vans and charging stations they are front loading the costs in this financial year.freespeech wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 15:30Of course they will but that doesn't change RM making massive losses.
