Part timers and the loss of pride in the job.

Post by councillor »

We're all aware that full timers who leave are being replaced by part timers. These, in my office at least, tend to be young kids on a 24 hour contract living at home with Mum and Dad working for a bit of beer money before moving on to a proper job.

No new RM employee can expect to bring up a family, etc, on part time wages. That's why all my new colleagues lately have been kids, and the service is fooked.

If it wasn't for the overtime the part timers at my office would struggle

You are expected to get by on £40 a week though?

If part timers only worked there contracted hours then you'd soon be made full time. The more overtime a part timer works the less likely you will receive a permanent increase in contractual hours.

RM have basically got PT by the balls and they know this I just wish some of the staff would wake up and have a pair.

The simple answer is STOP working overtime and after a few months you're contracts will be increased.

8 part time staff have done this in my office and have been increased from 20hrs to 35hrs

The reason part timers stay part time is very simple. RM only pay you part time wages when your on leave or off sick, and they only pay you for what you do, I don't know any part timers that actually make time and take home a decent wage. Phantom is right, they have got you by the balls and the simple answer is STOP working overtime and after a few months you're contracts will be increased.

Part Timers are entitled to exactly the same terms and conditions as full timers, and that includes a long weekend every 5th week the same as 5 day workers who have a rolling day off. I wonder how many part timers actually have rolling days off and take it?

I know of at least half a dozen full timers under twenty five who are crap at their job leaving mech bundles and big parcels for the part time cover on their day off and have seen six full timers sacked in the last six months for (1) nicking (2) for D2Ds (1) for security reasons (2) for sickness. In that time one part timer temp was sacked for cutting off after being forced to do two rounds at Chistmas when it got dark!
In the 2006 agreement Ward and Hayes both emailed me to say what a fantastic agreement it was and that part timers would get a review of their terms and conditions after i emailed them to say how crap it was and how we (part timers) had been done over for the very poor spoils that full timers got with allowances. The 2007 agreement was even worse and has cost the lucky few that get made up to full time a twelve quid pay cut on what a current full timer gets with early shift allowance. RM wish to keep part timers as they (pt) cant afford to buy extra pension and they hope will be at their beck and call cap in hand for overtime when RM need them, they can all feck off!

My experience in Distribution was originally treat part timers mean and keep 'em keen , it's typical RM to divide and conquer and try to dilute the old school heavily unionised culture . If we did get extra hours it was stuff that full -timers didn't want and the attitude from both RM & the CWU was you'd to be eternally thankful for these scraps .

I agree that SOME full timers are trying to run the Post Office by deliberately leaving work for AG's , then there's deliberate wind downs and slow downs . That's Management Failure and Command & Ignore . That just causes division and resentment and it backfired in 2003 with the strike ballot , though I agreed you HAD to stand up to Leighton , you'd be losing money or on a line with SOME people who hated your guts as they wanted the hours but not the work and would gladly have you out of the building . Probably exactly what RM wanted ? .

I've known one Shift Manager saying that there will be no full time docket on one s***hole of a section between 1700-2200 hrs but that's again p*** poor management turning a blind eye to stuff , condoning things as AG's "deserve it " .Unfortunately his answer was more AG's who couldn't read sort etc but that's all the Pc nonsense , to be fair training and testing is pathetic .

There is AG's that don't give a s**t , have no loyalty to the Crown , or any concept of service and give the uniform a bad name , that's RM's short sighted stupidity in trying to run places like a Supermarket and glorified floor supervisors / failed postman as junior managers . C*** command and control Senior Management style is responsible for that . It just means they can't really motivate and control poor managers .

Delivery is a different kettle of fish , when SDD came in , AG's only had their hours increased as RM knew some old timers didn't want to be tramping the streets in the afternoon which is understandable .

I can agree with calling RM's bluff and not dancing to their tune though because RM want their cake and eat it ,with the job getting worse with trying to pour a quart into a pint glass , the cracks will show and you start seeing the bigger picture and realize noone is imune .

I'll probably get my head bitten off for this but I'm just trying to go through the middle & some people are their own worst enemies be it full timers or AG's .

How do you work out that not doing overtime will lead to a full time position?, I am 25hour contract but work overtime purely by choice. Some of the full time workers in my office have it easy start at 0615 finish by 1230 that 6.15 hours by my book. 6.15x5=31? full time?, I work say 31 hours and get paid 31 hours.

What do PTer's do for those "few months" without OT though?
EDIT: Sorry, that is the point you're making

The only trouble with PT working their hours is that (esp in m,y office) the full timers get all the OT and the PT more often then not are never asked because the OT is always offers before they come in. I know at least 3 FT, before the new manager came, who finish their round early do cuts off and do other people pennies on a weekly bases.

In my office the PT's usually finish before the FTs but most of the FT duties are rurals.

Hey I am AG and the reason I am AG is because my DOM (not line manager) refuse to give me a full time contract because of my disability or in his words sickness, I want to be full time

I'd love to be full time too, sadly cause I also have a disability (dyslexia) They dont even let me prep my own walk because apprently "You take longer than everyone else" Oh and plus the fact that no women in our office do full time duties, I'm tempted to transfer sometimes. I thought working for Royal Mail would be quite enjoyable but it really does feel as though it's run by school children, actually the school children would have more sense!!!!!
